Bascome double stuns US Major League stars

Miami Fusion 2 Bermuda 3 David Bascome scored twice as a spirited Bermuda team came back from two goals down to beat Major League Soccer side Miami Fusion last night.

Paul Cann grabbed the other goal as the visitors struck three times in 20 minutes to leave the Eastern Conference team shellshocked.

But the Florida weather had earlier almost thwarted Clyde Best's charges in their bid to get much-needed match practice ahead of the Shell Caribbean Cup in Cayman Islands this weekend.

Fusion's World Cup star Carlos Valderrama had put the home side ahead on the stroke of the interval when a rapidly approaching thunderstorm finally dropped its load on the impressive Lockhart Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

The Colombian, playing his penultimate game before joining up with his national side, had sidestepped Neil Paynter's challenge on the edge of the area before committing goalkeeper Timmy Figuereido by feinting to shoot then slipping the ball just inside his left hand post.

But with forked lightning bombarding the nearby Fort Lauderdale airport, the referee decided discretion was the better part of valour and ordered the teams to take shelter under the uncovered stands just as the second half was about to begin.

Within minutes fierce slanting rain and hailstones swept in over the 21,000 capacity ground, threatening to cause abandonment.

It was in marked contrast to two hours earlier when Bermuda arrived under clear skies and temperatures in the high 80s.

Best had opted for a three-five-two formation with captain Shannon Burgess as the last man behind Kentoine Jennings and Paynter.

Paul Cann and Chris Sabir were deployed as wing backs alongside Duvarr Boyles and Dennis Robinson with David Bascome lying just back from the front two, Elliot Jennings and Dwight Basden.

The sun reappeared after a break of about 25 minutes but the outlook was gloomy for Bermuda within three minutes of the restart when Henry Gutierez drove a free kick from 22 yards off the wall and past Figuereido.

Fusion had used the interruption to make wholesale changes, bringing on a couple of triallists and removing Valderrama from the action.

Bermuda were forced to withdraw Kentoine Jennings, who had taken a nasty knock on the back of the calf in the first half, and replaced him with Dano Outerbridge.

It all served to create a much more open game after a rather cautious first 45 minutes in which Fusion, finding space on the flanks, had the majority of chances.

Within a minute of going 2-0 down though, Bermuda were back in it. Dwight Basden's determined run down the left was matched with a perfect cross which Paul Cann volleyed home from near the penalty spot.

Seven minutes later after Best sent on a trio of substitutes -- Damon Ming, Tafari Outerbridge and Reggie Tucker for Chris Sabir, Elliot Jennings and Boyles -- Bermuda were level.

Ming made an immediate impact, picking up a neat chip and using pace to beat a defender before intelligently cutting the ball back for Bascome to drive home.

Then in the 68th minute Bascome robbed Marcelo Herrera, found himself one on one with goalkeeper Scott Budnik who forced him wide but couldn't prevent him slotting home despite a defender's desperate lunge on the line.

Tafari Outerbridge almost made it four, sending in a 30-yard shot which shuddered off the bar with Budnik beaten. Basden also found time to glance a header wide and then beat the offside trap but lost sight of the ball when it ballooned off Budnik's shins.

Bermuda: T.Figuereido (A.Lightbourne, 65 mins), S.Burgess (captain), K.Jennings (D.Outerbridge 45 mins), N.Paynter, D.Boyles (R.Tucker 53 mins), D.Robinson, P.Cann, D.Bascome, C.Sabir (D.Ming 53 mins), E.Jennings (T.Outerbridge, 53 mins), D.Basden.

CARLOS VALDERRAMA -- the Colombian World Cup star scored first for Miami last night but still ended up on the losing side.
