Bassetts snatch gross division

yesterday at Port Royal, carrying Steve and Beth Bassett to a heartfelt victory during the Bermuda Valentines Mixed Foursomes tournament.

Entering the day with a 10-stroke advantage in the gross division, the Bassetts, hailing from Andover, Massachusetts, took few risks under windy conditions and were rewarded at the end with a similar advantage over the second place team.

The pair shot 81, giving them a gross total of 219 over three rounds, after carding 65 at St. George's Golf Club on Tuesday and following with 73 the next day at Port Royal.

Trailing in second place were the local team of Bill Pitt Jr., and Shirley James, who returned 80 yesterday, which, added to 74 and 75 recorded earlier, allowed them a 229 total. They edged by one stroke Ed Westcott and Janet Bruce of Black Diamond Ranch, Florida.

Pitt and James never recovered from triple bogey sevens midway through the tournament.

First in the low net category were part-time residents Joan and Charlie Hartnett at 176, with by Deputy Governor Peter Willis and wife Meg (184), who were second by retrogression over Ken Elkins and Leslie Watson.
