Bay dethrone Stars for Premier title

St. George's did not bat Rain forced the important championship match at Sea Breeze Oval between Bailey's Bay and St. George's to be abandoned 28 overs into the Bay innings.

But the good news for title-chasers Bay is so was Stars' match with PHC, leaving Bay as champions of the Premier Division Open Championship.

Bay, a point ahead of St. George's and ten in front of third-placed Stars, got one point for the no result as the match did not last a minimum 50 overs as the victory made up for their loss in the Eastern Counties the day before.

The match, which did not start until 1.22 p.m. because of early morning rain, was interrupted by two rain stoppages later in the afternoon. The first kept the players off the field for 45 minutes and when the second came at 5.22 in bad light the umpires did not even bother to call for the covers as the players went off for the last time.

Glenn Blakeney was high man for Bay with 83 not out, blasting the St. George's bowling for six sixes and four fours. Five of Blakeney's sixes came off spinner David Adams as he completed 1,000 runs for the season when he reached 59. Blakeney came to the wicket after just three delivers, when Cal Dill was dismissed in the first over.

Blakeney and Roger Trott (20) put on 61 for the second wicket before St.

George's hit back through Herbie Bascome who claimed four for 55 from 14 unchanged overs. Adams took two for 41 off 10 overs.

St. George's had a severly depleted team, with Wendell Smith captaining the team in the absence of both captain and vice captain Clay Smith and Dean Minors who are off the Island.

Also missing were Jason Lewis and Mark Ray as Ricky Hodsoll and Troy Bean returned after long absences. Lewis Foggo had to come out to make up the number despite a hand injury which contributed to a dropped catch off a hooked shot from Blakeney when he was on 76.

PHC 165 Western Stars did not bat Western Stars blew their chance of defending their title when they took 48.1 overs to dismiss an eight-man PHC team at St. John's.

The match did not start until 1.39 because of the rain but had Stars dismissed their opponents cheaply, as expected, they could have clinched the victory that would have enabled them to overtake Bailey's Bay and St. George's.

Kevin Dill, Gerald Simons and Arthur Richards slowed up Western Stars' progress with knocks of 43, 33 and 38 respectively at the top of the PHC batting order while captain Cal Waldron scored 25 not out to further frustrate Stars.

Cleon Scotland claimed four for 14 from eight overs and Gary Brangman two for 38.

Willow Cuts 150-3 Southampton did not bat Willow Cuts gave Rangers something to think about a week before their Western Counties final clash when this match at Southampton Oval was also hit by the rain.

Before the game was called off at 5.20, Willow Cuts had scored 150-3 with Jermaine Warner hitting 71 not out to lead their batting. Davon Wade scored 25 and captain Dexter Basden 20. Cuts batted for 38.5 overs. The match between St. David's and Police at Lord's did not start because of a wet wicket.
