Belgian has eyes on 10-k record

International Race Weekend, arrived in Bermuda on Sunday with designs on both the ADT 10-K title and course record.

A former army sergeant, Hellebuyck was the first of many foreign competitors expected to flood the Island's roadways in the coming days for the January extravaganza, some aiming to win and others merely to compete.

"I hope to win in a 28 (minute) time and close to the record, maybe better,'' said Hellebruyck, possessing a personal best of 28 minutes, 16 seconds, during a television interview.

"The field is good and maybe we can do it. I'll probably view the course this week maybe (today).

"I saw the race once on ESPN's Race of the Month and saw that it was a pretty nice run. I like the hills and I like the bayside and I said, `I want to go into this race'.'' He added that '93 had indeed been a good year and "I am still in the same (good) shape and have been training about 120 miles a week and feeling healthy''.

American contender Keith Brantley was pointed out by Hellebuyck as one likely to offer a spirited challenge on Saturday, having faced him in the past.

Meanwhile, Elite mile combatant Paul Freary of Britain is expected on the Island today to begin his preparations for Friday night's event.

Freary, fifth last year, has a best mile time of 4:01 and recently won the Lancashire Cross-Country Championships.

He will also want to improve on his 4:12.9 clocking in '93 maybe spring a surprise or two.

The Fitness Expo will be held at Number One Shed on Thursday (4-7 p.m.), Friday (11 a.m.-7 p.m.) and Saturday (noon-5 p.m.) to coincide with runner registration for the various events.

There will be a meeting tonight for all regular International Race Weekend volunteers. Those interested in taking such positions are encouraged to attend at 5.30 p.m. at the boardroom of the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation.
