Bermuda-based triathlete Neil de Ste. Croix and Claire Sousa endured harsh conditions overseas competing in the Jersey International Triathlon, managing
With water temperatures at 59 degrees and air readings even cooler the pair suffered through a demanding swim, which left them numb for the cycle and most of the run portion of the race. Wind was also a factor gusting up to 40 knots.
De Ste. Croix was clocked in two hours, 12 minutes, which was more than 30 minutes behind overall winner Robin Brew (1:54:34), a professional from England, who previously competed in the Bermuda International Triathlon.
Sousa narrowly missed finishing a place higher but still performed credibly, coming home in 2:39.

Teams from New York Athletic Club, Ottawa, Chicago, Canada, United States, England, Scotland and Halifax as well as two local sides -- a Bermuda national team and OCC -- will be competing against one another. This international event will feature several world-class amateur players and will be open to the public at no charge.

All categories started off simultaneously, but the group was quickly splintered by waves of attacks led by Damion Wilson, Vance Stevens and Hubbard.
Lap three saw the threesome of Hubbard, Mike Lee and Clark Tear escape the pack and by the 10th lap they had built a two-minute lead.
The 20-year-old's intentions were clear, he did not want to risk a finishing sprint with Tear. Thus he constantly produced energy draining surges and eventually sped away from the pursuing pair of Lee and Tear.
At the end. Hubbard finished over a minute ahead in a time of 1:06:46. Tear was second (1:08:06) and Lee third (1:08:08).
There were no surprises in the veterans category where Jeff Payne (1:10:20) rode away from Vic Ball and George Sutherland.
Meanwhile, Durwood Cann made a triumphant entrance in the novice division, winning in his first-ever race.
Trevor Hedges broke away from brother Chris and William Massey to claim first place in the 10-lap junior event.
HOCKEY HOC North Village Longtails opened up defence of their Bermuda Ladies Hockey Association `A' League title over the weekend with a dramatic 5-3 victory over PHC.

Leading the fightback were Lisa Rawlins, who scored once, Lisa DeSilva and captain Joanne Wilson both of whom found the net on two occasions.
Also enjoying a successful start to the 1992-92 season were Coca-Cola Cardinals who downed Police Orioles 2-0 with newcomer Mary Leonard scoring both goals.
In `B' League action, Bluebirds and Coca Cola Cardinals `B' both emerged victorious.
The former outlasted PHC Canaries `B' 2-0 on a double strike by Alex Adam.
Cardinals defeated Police Orioles by a similar margin with Laura Bardgett taking a short corner and finding Tracy MacPhee, who made no mistake with her effort. The second came through a fine solo effort by Gina Evans.
CHESS CHS The Bermuda Chess Club's six-round Active chess tournament came to an exciting end with number one seed Nick Faulkes going into the last round a half-point behind third seed Brian Stephenson.
As Stephenson had previously beaten Faulkes in round four, all he needed was a draw against second seed Nigel Chudleigh. However, Chudleigh proved too strong for Stephenson and with Faulkes beating George Ben the title went to the top seed.
Final scores: Nick Faulkes 5 points; Brian Stephenson 41 ; Nigel Chudleigh 4; Michael Craggs 4; George Ben 31 ; Tony Saunders 31 ; David Arorash 3; Bob Bagley 21 ; David Shanks 21 ; Kennedy Simmons 21 ; Larry Ebbin 11 ; David Elleson 1.
