Bermuda juniors dominate races
the weekend in the Mrs T's Chicago Triathlon and the Danon Junior Triathlon, events that attracted 5,200 entries, including a very strong professional field.
In Saturday's junior event, Bermuda dominated the age groups. Tim Fox and Ricky Sousa comfortably finished in first and second places in the boys' six to eight category.
In the 11-12 boys' group, Bermuda took the top six positions. Chayce Smith led the way, with Tyler Abbott second and Coyatito Smith third. Matthew Jones, Geoffrey Smith and Dominique Nannette rounded out the successful sextet.
Chris Conway took top honours in the boys' 13-14, with Matthew Herring finishing third.
In the girls' categories, Flora Duffy continued to impress with a second place in the 11-12 age group behind the USA's leading junior. Lianna Lambert finished well up the field in the same age group.
Further success for Bermuda's young contingent came yesterday as they competed in the sprint event of a 750m swim, 20K bike ride and 5K run. Brian Steinhoff not only won the 15-19 age group but was the first competitor out of 5,200 across the finishing line and fourth overall out of 700 entrants in the sprint.
Steinhoff was closely followed by 15-year-old Nick Taylor who took second in the category. Chris Conway, 14, won the 13-14 age group -- the US Junior East Coast Championship -- with Matthew Herring in second place.
Ashley Robinson Roberts and Robyn Dickinson also medalled, finishing second and third respectively in the girls' 13-14 East Coast Championship.
Not to be outdone by the juniors, Bermuda Triathlon Association president Neil de Ste Croix posted the second fastest time overall in the sprint event to take the men's 30-34 title. Claire de Ste Croix came second in the ladies 30-34 age group, while Carolyn Conway won the ladies' 40-44 title.
Bermuda's sole competitor over the Olympic distance was Jonathan Herring in the men's 16-19 category. Full results were unavailable at press time, but the pro fields were extremely strong with Australians Greg Welch and Michelle Jones taking the men's and women's titles respectively.
