Bermuda overpowered

experienced openers Sudesh Dhaniram and Clayton Lambert saw Guyana steamroll over newcomers Bermuda by 10 wickets in their third round Zone A Shell/Sandals match at Bourda yesterday.

Dhaniram's swashbuckling 63 was scored off 53 balls with three massive sixes and nine fours. Lambert's 41 came off 63 balls with a six and four boundaries.

Dhaniram was fittingly voted man-of-the-match by adjudicator Clive Lloyd afterwards.

Set a paltry 109 for victory off the allotted 50 overs, Guyana finished on 113 off just 17.2 overs.

Once again the depth of the Guyana batting was not tested, having sent all three teams to take the first strike and dismissing them for low scores.

Bermuda, invited to bat after Carl Hooper had won the toss, were shot out for 108 in 42.2 overs.

By lunch Guyana had motored to 80 without loss off only 11 overs. Dhaniram, who had two previous low scores, dominated the opening stand. He was undefeated on 49 including 22 from an over by left arm spinner Kameron Fox.

Dhaniram and Lambert completed the assault on the resumption and sped to victory after only a further 5.2 overs.

Guyana, who have defeated every team in the zone to date, are on six points.

Bermuda, who have yet to taste victory, remain pointless.

Like other teams before them, Bermuda looked hapless against the Guyana spinners and in frustration played rash strokes and lost wickets at regular periods. Leg spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo again proved effective, taking three for 29 in a containing 10-over spell.

Off spinner Hooper captured two for nine off five testing overs and paceman Kavin Darlington, who made the initial breakthrough, took two for 14 off seven overs.

From the time Darlington removed openers Clay Smith and Roger Trott, caught in the slips by the catlike Hooper and Roger Harper, Bermuda were under pressure.

Captain Albert Steede, who made 23 off 52 balls, and Charlie Marshall whose 21 came off 43 balls, tried to rectify the damage with a third wicket partnership of 42.

The next best effort was that of Dean Minors with 19. The tail wagged through Minors and Bruce Perinchief who put together 29 for the ninth wicket but leg spinner Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who was introduced in the dying stages, ended the partnership.

Guyana take on Windward Islands in the next round of matches on Thursday at Hampton Court, Essequibo while Bermuda meet Barbados at Bourda.

In other matches yesterday the Leeward Islands beat Canada by eight wickets (Canada 74, Leewards 75-2); the Windward Islands beat Barbados by two wickets (Barbados 165, Windwards 166-7); and Trinidad and Tobago beat Jamaica by 43 runs (Trinidad and Tobago 221-8, Jamaica 178).
