Bermuda receive an inhospitable welcome
GEORGETOWN, Cayman Islands -- Having got caught in one storm on Tuesday -- the type with thunder, lightning and hail -- Bermuda flew into one of the more figurative kinds when they arrived in the Cayman Islands yesterday.
This time it was the lack of training facilities available for the side, who play Cuba in their opening match of the Caribbean Cup tomorrow, that was the problem.
Technical director Clyde Best was was under the impression he had arranged for a field to be made available for the team to do stretching and limited ball work following their 3-2 friendly win over Miami Fusion the previous day.
Not so, according to Cayman Islands Football Associatiion officials, who were forced, at Best's insistence, to locate some ground near the team's somewhat cramped airport hotel.
Eventually they found an open piece of grass -- actually one of the cricket grounds -- for their workout.
The CIFA had arranged for two training sessions for Bermuda today at 10.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. but Best was equally nonplussed to find these would not take place at the Truman Bodden Stadium, where the tournament matches are being staged.
Meanwhile, Kyle Lightbourne and Karl Roberts, whose father was buried on the weekend, both joined up with the team for yesterday's session. Head coach Robert Calderon was happy enough with the workout, even though it took place at the junction of two main roads and balls regularly disappeared on to them.
"It went pretty well,'' he said. "We worked on some forward moves and getting the ball wide to the strikers. You can see the difference with Kyle there. He makes the runs we've been looking for instinctively.'' Best and Calderon are holding off naming their team for the Cuba match util after this morning's training session. Kentoine Jennings missed yesterday's workout, resting an injured calf which he injured on Tuesday, and captain Shannon Burgess also took a knock in the game but both are expected to be fit.
"It's best to hold off naming a team until you're sure who's going to be able to play,'' said Calderon.
The Bermuda team get a preview of what they're up against by watching Cuba and Caymans draw 2-2 in the opening match last night.
Caymans twice came from behind after Cuba scored in the 14th and 70th minutes through Lester Moore and Yunesk Rodriguez. Cayman equalised in the 45th and 83rd minutes through Lee Ramoon and sub Carlos Welcome.
