Bermuda score a wild win
It was ironic that two teams who had just combined for eight goals in regulation time should have trouble scoring in penalty kicks. But that's how the consolation final of the International Youth Tournament ended, when the Bermuda national under-15 side scored a wild 5-4 victory over FC Porto at National Stadium last night.
Bermuda, who forced the shootout on an 88th minute goal by Omar Ray, missed two of five from the spot -- although one was successfully retaken. But that was enough to subdue a pro-Portugese crowd, who watched as Porto failed on three of four attempts.
The last one came as Bermuda keeper Zane Hendrickson dove left to block a low shot by Tiago Silva, opening the door for Raymond Beach to become the hero.
Porto keeper Helder Rodrigues got a hand on Beach's chip inside the right post but it trickled over the line, setting off a frenzied celebration by the Bermuda team.
Bermuda's lone win in the first three games of the four-team tournament was over Porto. But the visitors seemed intent on revenge, dominating the first half and withstanding a furious Bermuda rally to take a 4-3 lead on Carlos Duarte's looping shot from the right wing over Hendrickson.
Bermuda had 25 minutes to come up with the equaliser and they needed 23 of them. Finally during a goalmouth scramble, Ray was able to hammer in a rebound from Beach's blocked shot.
The momentum carried over into penalties, when Porto's Antonio Teixeira shot wide and Bermuda's Jabari Furbert, granted a second chance when Rodrigues was adjudged to have moved early, found the left corner.
Carlos Gonsalves' goal and Marlon Dill's miss set up a key tournaround on the third attempts, when Pedro Rocha shot wide and Ray drilled his just under the bar.
In regulation time, Mackie Crane scored twice for Bermuda. His first, a sharp header from Dill's 40th minute free kick, was his team's only score of the first half; his second, a drive from Shannon Raynor's fine through ball in the 59th minute, gave Bermuda their first lead.
Furbert had the other Bermuda goal, coming on in the second half and scoring in the first minute of the restart.
The fireworks were a long time coming. But after a mostly indifferent first half, the goalfest finally erupted in the 35th minute.
Seconds after first-half 'keeper Paul Fox punched out a corner kick, Porto's Helder Postiga scored from the penalty spot after being brought down just inside the box.
In the 43rd minute, Tiaga Silva, a standout all game, moved in from his fullback spot and slid in to knock a loose ball off the post just before Fox could reach it.
