Straight-set losers to Cuba in their opening tie on Monday, Bermuda yesterday were thrashed 3-0 by Bolivia in the Americas Zone Group II event at the Casa de Campo Resort.

And afterwards, coach and captain Jerome Bradshaw had his four players on the Har-tru clay courts for an extra practice session to help stem the tide before today's tie against Jamaica.

"We're working on keeping the ball in play during a match situation,'' said Bradshaw. "We've had lots of drills but when it comes to matches, there's a bit of pressure on them and they seem too concerned about missing. And when you try to get too careful you tend to make mistakes.'' For the second straight day, Bradshaw used all four players, with Debra Darrell once again playing number one singles and Kelly Holland limited to doubles. Yesterday, veteran Kim Simmons, who played number two singles to open the competition on Monday, teamed up with Holland, while Danielle Paynter, who played doubles on Monday, took over the singles slot.

And Paynter had the best performance of the bunch, losing to Alejandro Clauro 6-1, 7-6 (7-3). The 16-year-old was up 6-5 and serving for the second set only to lose her serve and the ensuing tiebreak.

As Bermuda learned in their Fed Cup debut last year, opponents have the ability to bear down at key times. "Either they come up with a big shot or they manage to stay in the point, i.e. not give it away,'' said Bradshaw.

Darrell lost to Carla Jimenez 6-2, 6-1 -- a slight improvement over Monday's loss to Cuba's Yoanis Montesino, who beat her 6-0, 6-0. In that match, Darrell earned a total of just seven points.

Clauro and Monica Boveda defeated Holland and Simmons 6-2, 6-0 yesterday. On Monday, Paynter and Holland were beaten by Montesino and Yamile Fors 6-1, 6-1.

Bradshaw said fatigue was a factor when Simmons lost 6-2, 6-3 to Fors on Monday.

Simmons will likely get the call again today against Jamaica, who defeated Costa Rica 3-0 yesterday after losing 3-0 to Uruguay on Monday. Bermuda play Costa Rica tomorrow.
