Best banks on speed to beat young Danes

BFA Technical Director Clyde Best hopes Bermuda's speed in the final third of the field will help them overcome the cream of Denmark's youngsters when they play two matches against their under-21s in the space of three days next week.

The Scandinavian nations are known for their strength and fitness but Best boldly asserts: "It doesn't matter how fit you are if you've not got the ball. "What we have to pay special attention to is keeping possession of the ball so we don't have to do too much chasing. Then when we get in the final third of the field, we can use our speed.

"Perhaps what a lot of people in Bermuda are not aware of is that what we do have here is speed.'' Unfortunately for the former West Ham star, he has been hit by an injury crisis as the Island prepares for unprecedented third and fourth matches against international opposition within a month.

North Village's Randy Spence, involved in both matches against Antigua, is an almost definite non-starter after he dislocated his shoulder in an awkward fall following a strong but fair challenge by Southampton's Donnie Charles in the Friendship Trophy on Tuesday night.

Also considered doubtful are Ellington Weldon and Jahmah Samuels, both with ankle problems, Karl Roberts, who has a groin strain, Andrew Rahman, who has a shoulder injury and Keishon Smith.

But one man's misfortune is another's opportunity and Best points out that it will give him a chance to have a look at some younger players to see how they measure up.

Those who might be able to take advantage of openings include Desmond Burgess, Jelani Scott and Dennis Zuill.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Dwayne Adams and Stanton Lewis will be flying in from the US to take their places in the squad.

Like the Antigua matches, the two games against the Danes -- on Sunday at Wellington Oval and Tuesday at BAA Field -- are being used as preparation for the upcoming Caribbean Cup in May.

"It's a great time for us to have four games in one month,'' said Best. "In Bermuda that's unheard of.

"This is the best thing for us. You can't get better by being dormant.'' Best was happy with his team's performances against Antigua, particularly the first match when Kenny Mills scored the clincher on his debut.

"I'm pleased with the whole thing. In the first game, especially, we did a professional job,'' he said.

"In the second game we made five changes and they came out with a bit more intensity and we weren't able to play like we did in the first. When you make changes, sometimes that happens.'' Best expects keen competition from Bermuda's opponents, who were arriving last night. Two of the squad are players with crack club Brondby who were in the same Champions League group as Manchester United.

But he added: "Everybody is eager to go, they want more games and they understand the importance of being fit.

"I'm very impressed with the guys, they understand what we want and what is out there for them. They are willing to take the bull by the horns and that's what I've been asking for ever since I've been here.

"You don't underestimate anybody but at the same time I don't want anybody to underestimate us. They are professionals but we can still compete with professionals if we prepare properly and go out and do the right things.'' Best sticks with the 3-5-2 formation he has instigated since taking over at the helm of Bermuda soccer -- and he makes no apologies for it.

"It's more flexible,'' he says. "Everybody plays it now and if you don't you leave yourself open to being exploited with so many players coming through from midfield.'' THE SQUAD Dwayne Adams, Timmy Figureido, Clifford Roberts, Shannon Burgess, Kofi Dill, Ascento Russell, Kenny Mills, Otis Steede, Stanton Lewis, Meschach Wade, Kaiwon Dill, Devarr Boyles, Devon Binns, Dennis Robinson, Kentoine Jennings, Keishon Smith, Karl Roberts, Ellington Weldon, Andrew Rahman, Jahmah Samuels, Randy Spence. Standby: Dennis Zuill, Desmond Burgess, Jelani Scott LAST LINE OF DEFENCE -- Goalkeeper Dwayne Adams is flying in from the US to take his place in the Bermuda squad for the games against Denmark's under-21 team.
