Best names national squad of 40
national squad since being appointed to the position last week.
The squad of 40 includes four overseas professionals, Shawn Goater, Kyle Lightbourne, David Bascome and Paul Cann, while a notable absentee is goalkeeper Dwayne Adams, reported to be attending school in the United States.
Among the youngsters included are some regarded as Bermuda's stars of the future, such as utility player John Barry Nusum and defender Joey Rego who is scheduled to attend a soccer clinic in Brazil soon. Both are in their mid teens.
Aldwyn Savery, chairman of Bermuda Football Association's coaching committee, said yesterday they were taking a no-nonsense approach with every player being urged to give total commitment or face being dropped.
"We are becoming very strict with the players in order that we get full commitment. So right from the start we are going to tell them what we expect and if they don't like it we will pick others,'' said Savery.
"Unlike early in the year when we just put a squad together to play in the Shell/Umbro, right now we are not in a situation where we have to play in a competition and we are approaching it with a careful plan. We are going to talk to their clubs, meet with the coaches and get a commitment from the players right up front if they indeed want to be in the programme.'' Although no matches are scheduled until the possible visit of Cuba in late September, the intention is to get the squad prepared and ready competitively.
The BFA are not keen to have the squad meet top professional teams, preferring to concentrate on countries in the CONCACAF zone who they can be more competitive with.
The squad will train at National Stadium on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6.00 p.m. and on Saturdays at 10.30 a.m.
