BFA already looking ahead to next Classic
to expand the event to include a match involving past players.
Bermuda Football Association general secretary David Sabir said he was thoroughly pleased with the success of the event which featured junior, women's and senior men's all-star matches at Somerset Cricket Club.
"I think this has definitely laid the groundwork to staging another all-star match,'' said Sabir.
"It is well to say that an all-star match featuring players of yesteryear is right on the horizon. I think the creativity of holding an all-stars match has been found and hats off to everyone involved.'' One of the biggest attractions was the Colonial Challenge, in which five randomly selected spectators were given an attempt to win a brand new Ford Escort by kicking a ball from the halfway line into a three-foot-by-three-foot "goal'' suspended from the crossbar.
While neither Lloyd Wilson, Prince Fubler and Otis Minors, Ivan (Watusi) Butterfield or Jay Donawa were successful, three -- Fubler, Minors and Butterfield -- each won $100 by kicking the ball into the main goal from a shortened range.
Failure to find a winner of a new car was the only disappointment during an afternoon in which the players provided enjoyment for a crowd estimated at 1,500 fans.
"It was wonderful, everything we envisioned should happen in a match like that,'' said Sabir. "We achieved our objective today.
"The players, spectators, Somerset Cricket Club and the BFA must be commended for this event. It bodes well for the future in regards to staging an event that showcases the talent in Bermuda. I must say that thanks to the overwhelming support of the sponsors, the splendour of the all-stars has been achieved.'' The Royal Gazette , Shell, Coca Cola, Colonial Insurance and Senator Linda Milligan-Whyte were the sponsors.
