BFA to meet with affiliates

night at Devonshire Rec with all affiliates to discuss the composition of the First Division for the 1993-94 season.

The issue of whether the First Division should contain nine or 10 teams for the new season following the withdrawal of Hotels has caused much controversy, with the association deciding last week to stick with nine, even though president Charlie Marshall has said they were obligated to bring in a 10th team.

The association is understood to have sought legal advice on the matter. A petition was taken to the BFA by St. David's secretary Stuart Crockwell and contained the signatures of seven clubs, St. George's, Boulevard, St. David's, Vasco, Hamilton Parish, Prospect and Devonshire Rec, calling for a rethink on the initial decision to stick with nine teams.

Crockwell pointed out that only the minimum required seven signatures were sought but that the issue is supported by all the affiliates.

"It's important that all the affiliates show up for this meeting which will have an effect on the soccer programme,'' said Crockwell of next week's meeting which is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

The new soccer season will kick off with the Charity Cup on Saturday, September 25 between Somerset and Boulevard at Somerset (8 p.m.). Opening Martonmere Cup games are planned for September 28 and the opening round of league matches set for October 3.
