Big-hitting Blades leads Police revival
the semi-finals of the Knockout Cup on Saturday as league champions Western Stars crashed out.
Police eliminated Stars when they beat them by two wickets at Police Field with just three deliveries remaining.
Scores: Western Stars 170, Police 173-8.
Roger Blades, better known for his bowling, came good with the bat when Police needed him most, scoring 57 not out with four fours and five sixes to lead the home team to victory after they had slumped to 142-8.
Blades dominated an unbroken stand of 31 for the ninth wicket with Terry Thomas (four) as he reached his 50. Dennis Archer (34) and Dwayne Leverock (27) put on 44 for the first wicket while Peter Philpott added 26 before Blades, batting at number five, persevered as wickets fell around him.
Gary Brangman claimed two for 34 and Arnold Manders two for 37.
Earlier, Cleon Scotland scored 55 not out, Andre Manders 35 and Gary Brangman 20 for Stars.
Richard Basden feasted off Flatts' bowling when he struck 120 to lead Willow Cuts to an 86-run victory at Devonshire Rec.
Scores: Willow Cuts 268-3, Flatts 182.
Richard and his brother Dexter, the skipper, featured in an invaluable third-wicket partnership worth 194 runs, taking the score from 62 for two to 256 when Richard was finally bowled by Brandon Woolridge. Dexter finished unbeaten on 66.
Included in Richard's sparkling knock, which lasted 125 minutes, were eight fours and eight sixes. Dexter hit four fours and six sixes.
Also among the runs were Jermaine Warner with 32 and Dwayne Basden 25. Troy Dean led the Flatts bowling with two for 37 off nine overs.
Sound batting by Quinn Outerbridge (51) and Brandon Woolridge (40) forced Cuts to earn their victory. The pair added 111 for the fourth wicket, taking the score from 58 for four to 169 when Outerbridge was out lbw to Rodney Fubler after hitting three fours and four sixes.
Rodney Fubler and Brian Gibbons combined to take six wickets, Fubler finishing with three for 37 off 10 overs while Gibbons had three for 41 off eight overs.
Cleveland made easy work of Somerset, beating the home team by 128 runs.

Allan Douglas blasted 75 -- 60 of which came in boundaries from eight sixes and three fours -- as Cleveland made the Somerset bowlers suffer. The top four Cleveland batsmen, Carlton Smith, Curtis Jackson, Jason Simons and Courtney Trott all got in the 30s and Grant Smith added 29 before Douglas' late onslaught threatened to post 300.
Cleveland suffered five run outs in their innings, the first four bats and Douglas himself when he was last out with 1.4 overs remaining. Sidney Simmons narrowly avoided conceding 100 runs when the run out came off his bowling to leave him with figures of three for 99 from just 8.2 overs.
In a first round replay, Warwick made easy work of short-handed Somerset Bridge at Southampton Oval.
Scores: Bridge (eight men) 86, Warwick 90-3.
Gregory Maybury hammered almost half of the Bridge total, scoring 41 with two fours and three sixes before he was last out, one of two Ritchie Foggo victims in his only over.
Jeffrey James led the Warwick batting with 27 as they reached the target in just 15.4 overs. O'Neil Virgil took two for 20 from four overs.
Warwick will play Bailey's Bay in the remaining quarter-final.
