Bikers want evidence
A leading member of the Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club says he wants to see concrete proof that bikers can move to a new home before he can begin celebrating.
Members of the club are due to be kicked off their current base at the Southside Raceway in St. David's later this month so development work can get under way.
They were offered an alternative venue at Clearwater Beach, but rejected it because of safety fears and the cost of bringing the venue up to standard.
BMRC said ideally they would like a purpose built venue, but were willing to compromise and accept a site at Number One Gate, Kindley Field if the offer was made by Government.
Yesterday sports minister, Dennis Lister told The Royal Gazette that the club was likely to get its way -- although there were "some bridges that have to be crossed'' yet.
"It's not something that happens overnight and we can't just jump up tomorrow and say `here it is','' he said.
"Everybody knows that that will be their new home. I would be strangely surprised to hear them say that they don't know where their permanent home will be.'' BMRC vice-president, Grant Goudge said while happy it appeared a solution was in the offing, he would like to see some firm evidence from the powers that be.
"From my point of view, on a personal level, not representing the club, I still feel we are up in the air,'' he said.
"To me it's politicians and it's words. I have no concrete thing one way or the other. They are saying we have got to leave (Southside Raceway) but I have nothing in writing, they say they are offering me something but I haven't seen it.'' Goudge said the club would be approaching the Government with a view to getting something down in ink.
If that was forthcoming, Goudge said the club could begin planning for the future. "All we need is the go-ahead because we have got people that would finance it,'' he said.
