Glenn Blakeney has done enough with the bat to grab the attention of the BCBC selectors.

Now the dashing St. David's batsman needs to clarify his position as regards to playing under coach Allan Douglas before he can return to the international fold.

That situation was made clear yesterday by BCBC president El James when Blakeney's name was left out of a training squad of 25 released yesterday to prepare for a regional tournament in Toronto in August involving at least five countries.

Blakeney stated publicly after his last Bermuda appearance three years ago that he would not play under Douglas again. And as Douglas is still assisting the team until a full-time national coach is appointed, Blakeney's position needs to be clarified.

"He's absent right now because at this point we have not had our chat,'' said James.

"Until we get something back from him in writing, just stating his intention of being a part of the squad, it would be out of place right now to put his name in. But he's definitely in mind.'' Also omitted but not out of contention is wicketkeeper Dean Minors who has only just completed his post-graduate schooling.

The squad is missing six players from last year's Red Stripe Bowl, including opener Dexter Smith who hit a century on the weekend. Also not included are batsmen Dennis Archer, Aaron Adams, Irving Romaine, spinner Peter Philpott and strike bowler Herbie Bascome. But James stressed that the squad was not final.

"We have started with a squad. However, names can be added to that list and deleted from the list,'' said the president.

"However, we have to start somewhere. Dean is one of those individuals who has the talent and certainly would be in line for selection. He has just returned and we know his capabilities. Given a short bit of time he will be in contention for a permanent place in that squad. He brings a lot to the game.'' Southampton Rangers pair Keith Wainwright and Olin Jones are back in favour with the national squad selectors after some good scores, while Jermaine Warner's early season form with Bailey's Bay has also not gone unnoticed. Also getting another chance is Curtis Jackson of Cleveland, while the newcomers include Somerset fast bowlers Francis Richardson and Wendell White, Bailey's Bay's Dennis Pilgrim and Justin Robinson of Western Stars.

The selectors are also looking to the future with their selections, with youngsters Mackie Crane, Chris Foggo, Landro Minors, OJ Pitcher and Stephen Outerbridge all invited to train.

"All the countries in the region will be in Toronto, at least five countries, and it will be important how we come out as you get a seeding from this tournament,'' said James.

A session will take place on Monday at Warwick Workmen's Club at 6.00 p.m. and all the players listed below are urged to attend as an important meeting that will follow.
