Board confirms Derbyshire visit
Bermuda at the end of March, while Test team Pakistan might just make a visit to Bermuda after all, Bermuda Cricket Board of Control president Ed Bailey disclosed yesterday.
Bailey confirmed Derbyshire's 10-day visit between March 23 and April 9, 10 days after a Bermuda squad returns from a training camp in Barbados. The English team's matches will be confirmed at a board meeting on Tuesday night.
Four of Derbyshire's better-known players are captain Kim Barnett, England `A' player Dominic Cork, England Test paceman Devon Malcolm and West Indies paceman Ian Bishop. Both Cork and Malcolm were here with the England `A' team last year while Bishop is already doubtful for the tour because it clashes with Pakistan's visit to the Caribbean.
Also to be discussed at that next week's meeting will be Pakistan's renewed interest in a tour here at the end of their tour to the West Indies. "I got correspondence back from Pakistan who want to renegotiate,'' Bailey explained.
"It seems they are prepared to offer sensible terms.'' The plan to host the World Cup champions fell through a few months ago when the board considered their financial demands excessive.
This summer promises to be a busy one in local cricket with Bailey also confirming yesterday that the visit of the West Indies B team has been tentatively slated for June 18-28.
For the second straight year the Bermuda Football Association has agreed to assist the board in its tours by agreeing to reschedule matches at the end of the season.
Last year the board rescheduled cricket matches to clear Sundays for World Cup qualifying matches.
The BCBC president is due in England next weekend for the ICC meeting at Lord's on February 2, which will decide the venue for the 1995 World Cup, and it is during that trip that he will meet with officials from the West Indies Board, Derbyshire and Pakistan.
As well as incoming tours, there will also be two trips (March and September) to Barbados by Bermuda squads for training camps while the Bermuda Youth team will be competing in the International Youth Tournament in Denmark from July 10-20.
