Bottles thrown during soccer match
The ugly side of soccer reared its head again last night when members of the crowd, angered by a penalty decision, hurled bottles onto the pitch in the match between Cougars and Colts.
Referee George O'Brien had awarded a spot-kick in favour of Colts for an attempted kick by the home keeper and had dismissed Cougars' Trevor Smith in the ensuing melee when the incident happened.
The official took both teams to the other end of pitch while he consulted his assistants.
After warning both sides that any more trouble would result in the game being abandoned, he allowed play to continue and Shannon Burgess put away the penalty for the only score of the game.
The match had begun with a minute's silence for "Case'' Ford, but in hindsight it is unlikely he would have wanted his name associated with a match which contained the aforementioned trouble.
Cougars went on the attack immediately forcing Bean into two saves within the first couple of minutes.
The first-half continued in similar vein, with the ball breaking to Cougars on numerous occasions as Colts' attacks broke down.
In the 28th minute the home side suffered a setback when Kenneth Swan was forced to leave the match after suffering a deep cut below the eye. Half-time came with the sides locked at 0-0, but the game ignited within a minute of the restart.
A long kick from Burgess was chased by Colts and when Ricardo Brangman rushed from his goal with his feet raised the referee blew for a penalty.
After the fracas Burgess despatched the spot-kick past Brangman with consumate ease.
But neither the subsequent goal or the sending off of a player, the second in two games involving Colts, caused Cougars to wilt.
Striker Phillip Clarke in particular was on song, breaking through on a number of occasions only to see his efforts saved by Bean.
When Kori Goddard sent in a wickedly dipping free-kick in the 80th minute, Bean had to be at his best again to tip it over.
Substitutes Quincy Aberdeen and Marvin Belboda for Colts tried their best to stretch the lead but were unable to do so.
This meant their team had to hang on to their slender advantage to the last and they were thankful to Bean once again in the last minute when he rushed from his goal to clear from the feet of Goddard.
Cougars will have left the stadium wondering how they ended up pointless with so much possession, while Colts will know they will have to perform much better.
