Bowlers lead Bridge to surprise victory

Flatts 92 Somerset Bridge surprised visiting Flatts by scoring this 10-run victory at White Hill Field yesterday, thanks to fine bowling performances from four players.

Brian Gibbons led the home side's attack by snatching three wickets for a mere two runs from three overs, including a maiden.

Denzil Dill gave assistance by taking three for 48 off 10 overs while Corvett Lambert and Durwood Cann claimed two apiece. Lambert had two for 27 from eight overs and Cann two for 13 from just 4.3 overs.

A week after scoring 282 against Willow Cuts in the Knockout Cup, Flatts struggled to reach a target of 103 with just three batsmen reaching double figures. Player-coach Dwayne Leverock scored 25, Rahji Edness 20 and Phillip Burgess 15.

Earlier the Bridge batsmen also struggled for runs with only veteran opener David Jones and Brian Gibbons reaching double figures. Jones finished with 41 while Gibbons scored 12.

Vernon Eve and Leverock combined to take eight wickets for Flatts, Eve finishing with four for 26 from 10 overs and Leverock four for 23 from 7.2 overs.

Social Club 58 St. George's 60-1 Social Club's early season woes continued yesterday, though for the first time this season they managed to field a team.

Social Club made it three defaults in a row on Saturday when only six players showed up for their Central Counties first round clash with Police.

Yesterday, they turned up with the minimum seven, though it wasn't until 12.37 p.m. that the match finally got underway. Still it was a quick game as joint league leaders St. George's wrapped up victory by 2.50 p.m. after dismissing the visitors for 58 in 18.3 overs and then taking just 7.1 overs to reach their target.

Veteran bowler Vance Gilbert topped the Social Club batting with 34.

Earl Richardson, a left arm medium-pacer better known for his football exploits with Vasco, was the pick of the St. George's bowlers with two for eight off six overs with two maidens.

Social Club got the breakthrough when Sinclair Gibbons, promoted to opener, was trapped lbw after scoring the first nine runs. But Dexter Smith, who played his early cricket with Social Club, finished unbeaten on 23 as he and Ryan Steede added 51 for the unbroken second wicket.

Devonshire Rec. 138 Police 100 The nephew and uncle duo of Ja Ja and Lyle Millett tore the heart out of Police yesterday with their fine bowling performance at Devonshire Rec.

They combined to snatch eight wickets between them as a young Devonshire Rec.

team pulled off a surprise 38-run victory.

Nephew Ja Ja led the attack by taking five for 25 off nine overs while Lyle finished with three for 16 off 7.5 overs as Police failed miserably in a bid to reach their modest target of 139.

The pitiful batting display saw just three Police batsmen reaching double figures, Daniel Reece being top scorer with 19 while skipper Dennis Archer hit 18 and Terry Thomas 13.

Devonshire, playing without stalwarts Anthony Amory and Donald Norford, had a grim start when they lost opener Cal Grimes (0) with just three runs scored.

But a second wicket stand of 70 between Audley Campbell (30) and Wendell Swan (38) saw them recover. However, when Campbell was out Police ripped through the batting order.

Terry Thomas was the best bowler for Police with four for 23 off 4.5 overs while Donovan Livingston had three for 37 off 10 overs and Freston Hurdle two for 15 from eight overs.

Willow Cuts 222-8 PHC 140 Richard Basden struck an undefeated century and Kevin Fubler snatched three for 22 to lead Willow Cuts to a comfortable 82-run victory over PHC at Somerset.

Basden's fine knock of 105 came after Cuts had already got off to a promising start with an opening stand of 47 between skipper Dexter Basden (29) and Dwayne Basden (8).

Although Cuts lost three wickets for 50, Richard Basden's innings blossomed and helped lead them to a formidable total for the loss of eight wickets in their 50 overs, Basden striking 13 fours and a six. The only other batsman who followed to reach double figures was Kevin Fubler with 14.

Neil Anglin was the top bowler for PHC with three for 27 off 10 overs, including a maiden while player-coach James Pace had three for 39 from 10 overs with two maidens.

Pace was top bat for PHC with 25 while opener Mark Smith scored 19, Kallan Johnston 19, Cal Waldron 15 and Sheridan Ming 13.
