Village 2 (after extra time) Goals from Jamal Boyles and Michael Hansey, the latter a penalty, in the second period of extra time finally saw off the challenge of 10-man Rangers in this Friendship Trophy tie at BAA Field last night.

Boyles struck with a fierce shot from the edge of the area in the 109th minute and Hansey competently rounded off the night's work from the spot after Kevin Jennings had been upended just inside the box a minute from time.

Rangers had held on bravely after being handicapped from the 83rd minute when their current indiscipline surfaced again with the sending off of Travis Wilkinson. Wilkinson left referee Anthony Mouchette with no choice after commiting a second bookable offence with an ugly foul on Devon Brangman. He had earlier been carded for a clumsy challenge from behind at the start of the second half.

It was the second successive match that a Rangers man had been sent for an early bath following Janeiro Tucker's dismissal amid shameful scenes that resulted in the abandonment of their league game against Vasco on Sunday. But it was a shame also for Wilkinson because prior to that he had looked as impressive as anything his side had on show.

In truth, though, Southampton's chief crime last night was their paucity of ideas in the final third of the field, where they rarely threatened. And while they lacked cohesion and a cutting edge, Village lacked a cool head in front of goal.

The last thing this scrappy, rather dull game needed was an extra half hour.

But with Neil Robinson slamming against the underside of the bar three minutes from time and Jameiko Jennings planting the ball too high from a position close to the goal-line following great work by namesake Kevin that, unfortunately, was what it got.

Village, though, will just be happy to have come through after an opening disrupted by injuries to Nyon Steede, who was replaced by Shervin Jennings after ten minutes, and Randy Spence.

However, Spence's replacement, Peter Mahoney, had a fine game at the back alongside the equally impressive Javon Thomas.

Goals from Everest Trott, Mackie Crane and Donovan Thompson saw St George's to a 3-0 victory over Prospect in their Friendship Shield clash last night.
