Boyles through to doubles semi-finals
first set and one set point in the 10th of the second set in order to advance into the semi-finals of the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Club Invitational Tournament at Coral Beach yesterday.
The pair ousted veteran former Davis Cup players, Norberto Herrero and Rafael Fuentes 6-4, 7-5.
The match was the highlight contest of the tournament to date, featuring youth and exhuberance against age and experience to produce a brand of doubles tennis that the thirsty crowd was waiting for.
The Boyles jumped out front early when they broke Herrero in the opening game, but the deciding game was the ninth when Graham was down 15-40 before holding for a crucial 5-3 lead and took the first set on Courtland's serve.
"The problem was that Fuentes couldn't seem to shake his teaching habits,'' chided Herrero when it was all over, "because when we were volleying he kept hitting the ball directly back to them as if saying `that was good, keep it up', as he would say to one of his pupils.'' But the real pressure is just beginning for the Boyles for they've now earned the right to meet another pair of brothers -- this time top seeds Brian and Michael Way.
Meanwhile, in easily the tournament's best escape act Robin Blackburne and Ray Moore, after losing the first set 4-6 and trailing 5-0 in the final set, fought back to defeat Rolf Theisen and Sam Lawrence 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
In the singles the seeded players moved through without incident even though second seed Mike Curry had a scare from John Johnson before winning 6-0, 7-5 while top-ranked Michael Way eased past Wilfred Gonsalves 6-3, 6-0 and third seed Stuart Smith stopped Graham Boyle 6-1, 6-1.
In what was expected to be a highlight match among the women, top seed Joan Hassell, captain of the Suffolk County senior team, proved to be too much for Tally Spadone, winning 6-1, 6-3. She then teamed up with her Bermudian host, Gill Butterfield, to defeat Wendy Salvia and Elaine Stevens 6-1, 6-1.
Action continues with several quality matches on today's agenda, starting at 10.30 when the women's second ranked Kelly Holland takes on Matchko Foley of Nantucket who is ranked 16th in the United States in mixed doubles and second in New England. Also at 10.30 are the men's second and third seeds, Mike Curry and Stuart Smith.
