Brentwood capture round robin event
With the championship race in the women's A hockey league already decided, action was last weekend focused in the B league and the round robin tournament.
On Saturday five local teams were joined by Brentwood College from British Columbia, Canada, and the latter emerged winners by virtue of scoring one more goal than the young Bermuda Under-21 squad, who had an identical record.
Brentford beat Saltus 3-0 in their opening game and then defeated Floozies and Flashy Forties 1-0 and drew 0-0 against Mums and the Bermuda Under-21 squad.
The Under-21 squad, who are due to tour Canada this summer in preparation for the Pan-Am Junior tournament, beat Saltus 2-0 on goals by Emily Black and Megan Spurling. They also edged Floozies and Flashy Forties 1-0 with Samantha Adams claiming the winner each time and then they drew 0-0 with Brentwood and Mums.
In B league play on Sunday Bluebirds overpowered a short-handed Orioles from the outset, but just could not find the finishing touch to take a deserved lead by the break. While there was poor finishing on the part of Bluebirds credit has to go to the Orioles goalkeeper Michelle Kendrick who made many important saves.
The second half saw consistent Bluebirds pressure which finally paid off with a goal by Ann-Marie Ivanoff that led to the 1-0 victory.
In the second game Swifts overcame another team short of players, Cardinals, by a score of 2-1.
Swifts started strongly and had several chances in the first five minutes but could not open the scoring.
Eventually captain Caroline Black struck a powerful penalty corner into the net to give Swifts a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes, then 10 minutes into the second half Leigh-Ann Shaw struck their second goal home from the edge of the circle.
Cardinals then hit back through Adrienne Cotterill who converted a cross from Judy Siddle, but it wasn't enough.
Cardinals were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty stroke when Swifts sweeper appeared to deliberately floor Jennie Kahl in the circle.
Swifts now move into second place in the tables with just one game left to play.
Canaries have already captured the A division title and lead Swifts by seven points with one game left.
