Bromby finishes third
Bacardi Cup yesterday in Miami after finishing the regatta with a third place.
Bromby, sailing with Canadian crew Kai Bjorn, ended the series with 18 points, two behind second-placed John MacCausland and Phil Trinter of the United States after they ended with a fourth place finish.
The cream rose to the top during the Bacardi Cup as Olympic medalists, Star World Champions and past Bacardi Cup winners dominated the top 10. Two-time Olympic medalist and 1995 Star World Champion Mark Reynolds and crew Magnus Liljedahl won four of the first five races and wrapped up the title with a day to spare.
Reynolds and Liljedahl were able to sit out yesterday's final race as they had already made certain of victory with finishes of 1-1-1-7-1 from their first five races for 11 points overall.
Reynolds, 41, of San Diego, celebrated his fifth Bacardi Cup victory at last night's award ceremony while crew Liljedahl, 43, of Coral Gables, Florida took his second consecutive win as crew.
Yesterday's race was won by two-time Bacardi Cup champion, 1994 Star World champion and 1992 Olympic bronze medalist Ross MacDonald and crew Dag Nyhof of Canada. The pair finished fourth overall, three points behind Bromby and Bjorn who had finishes of 4-6-2-8-3-3.
The regatta hosted 63 two-person boats from eight countries, with Bromby finishing in the top 10 alongside skippers from the United States and Canada.
First sailed in Havana, Cuba in 1927, the Bacardi Cup has been sailed out of Miami's Coral Reef Yacht Club since 1962.
