Brown sails into early lead

spots in the Optimist dinghy class after the opening day of the Bank of Butterfield National Junior Sailing Championships.

Brown leads the way with 13 points after four races, having recorded a first, third, seventh and second. Seven points behind in second place is Alex Lines after two fourths, a second and a 10th while Kirkland has 24 points from a second, seventh, sixth and ninth.

American Tavis Moonan and another local, AJ Black, complete the top five.

Moonan has 26 points and Black 30, with Moonan winning the third race and Black the fourth.

The other winner was William Thompson of Bermuda, after leading home the fleet in the second race, but he is well down the tables in 11th place after finishes of 16th and 18th in the last two races.

A total of 23 boats are competing in the Optimist class.

Meanwhile, there's a tie for first place in the 420 dinghy class which has six boats. The teams of Carter/Steinhoff and Crane/Tharmotheram are level on seven points from four races. Carter/Steinhoff had three seconds and a first yesterday and Crane/Tharmotheram two firsts, a second and a third. They lead Jones/Smith by three points.
