BTFA put finishing touches to squad

CARIFTA Games which are being held in Cayman Islands' brand new three million dollar stadium over the Easter weekend.

Although Bermuda have enjoyed reasonable success at the Games in recent years, having won five medals in Barbados last year and six the previous year in Martinique, national coach Gerry Swan isn't making any predictions about his team's medal-winning potential this year.

While he believes that some of the young athletes are capable of at least a top three finish, he says he isn't about to put them under pressure by making predictions.

"All I can say is that they have all trained very hard for this and I am pleased with their preparation,'' said Swan. "We may get a few medals this year, but I don't want to put any pressure on anybody by naming those who should.'' BTFA president Stanley Douglas, however, appeared more optimistic about the team's chances, although he was disappointed that only two girls will represent the Island this year -- Gina Cann and Jarita Dill.

Both compete in the Under-17 age group, Cann in the 100 and 200 metres and Dill in the 400 and 800 metres.

"We have some good people in the team, particularly Donte Hunt who has run the 100 metres in 10.80 electric and high jumper Stephen Woodley who represented Bermuda at the Commonwealth Games last summer and who qualified for the World Junior Championships last year with a personal best of seven feet, two inches,'' said Douglas.

"I can see medals being won by some of the seasoned athletes, many of whom continue to exceed their best each year at CARIFTA. And I expect most of the others to reach the final of their events.'' Woodley captured a gold in the high jump last year and a bronze in the triple jump while Hunt had a personal best in the Under-17 triple jump, although it was only good for fifth. He moves up to the older age division this year.

Middle-distance runner Michael Donawa is another who Douglas believes is a solid medal chance. He captured gold in the Under-17 division last year and will have a bigger challenge this time around as he moves up to the more competitive age group.

Bermuda will also be represented in the open 4x400 metres relay with the team expected to be chosen from Donte Hunt, Damian Simmons, Michael Donawa, Damon Ming, Atiba Tucker and Sharif Taylor.

Of the squad of 12, three will be making their CARIFTA debut -- Damon Ming, Tariq Hewey and Garon Wilkinson.

The team leaves at 7.00 a.m. tomorrow and return on April 18.

The full team is as follows: Under-20: Rohaan Simons (high jump, triple jump), Atiba Tucker (100m, 200m), Sharif Taylor (400m, 800m), Donte Hunt (100m, triple jump), Stephen Woodley (high jump), Damian Simmons (200m, 400m), Michael Donawa (1500m, 5000m), Damon Ming (800m).

Under-17: Tariq Hewey (100m, 200m), Garon Wilkinson (800m, 1500m), Gina Cann (100m, 200m), Jarita Dill (400m, 800m).
