Two national records, seven medals and 40 personal bests.

Those were the numbers compiled by a 17-member national swim team which competed in Ontario on the weekend.

Making their annual pilgrimage to the University of Waterloo meet, Bermuda swimmers saw their first long course action of the year and made the most of it against nearly 475 overseas swimmers.

Leading the way was Roy Allan Burch, who won two gold medals and a silver in the boys 11-12 year-old division. Stephen Troake won the other gold but had to leave after the first two days of the meet and missed a chance to compete in his specialty, the 100-metre freestyle.

Burch won the 50 and 100-metre freestyle and was second in the 100m backstroke. Troake won the 50m free in the 15-17 division. Scott Simmons -- in the 50m breast -- and Tamika Williams -- in the 50-metre freestyle -- earned bronze medals.

Williams, swimming in the 18-21 division, also joined Ashley Aitken in the record books with her time of 31.85 seconds in the 50m butterfly. Aitken set her mark -- 30.04 in the 50m free -- in the 11-12 heats but didn't get a chance to improve on it when she was forced to withdraw because of a shoulder injury.

Burch, meanwhile, was one of ten swimmers to qualify for the Caribbean age-group championships in Barbados in July, meeting the standard in three events. Graham Smith qualified in four events, Keira Aitken, Troake and Cowen in three each, Ashley Aitken, Candace Jantzen-Marson and Lesley Smith in two.

Also qualifying were Andrew Shaw and Williams.

Troake, who has already qualified for both the CAC Games in August and the Commonwealth Games in September, joined Trevor Ferguson, Graham Smith and Ronald Cowen on a 4x50m relay team that won a silver medal, missing gold by two tenths of a second.

Most of the swimmers will be back in the pool on Saturday for the second BASA Spring Meet, starting at 1.00 p.m. The third Spring Meet is two weeks later.

Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association will be holding their annual officials' clinics this weekend at Saltus Junior School. Senior Ontario official Chris Smith will conduct the sessions and anyone interested is asked to call Jenny Tufts at 238-1218.

Timekeeping and meet format will be held on Friday night; strokes and turns on Saturday morning; referee and starter on Sunday morning and clerk of the course on Sunday afternoon.
