Cameron double keeps Canaries record intact

with a 2-0 victory over Cardinals, extending their lead at the top of the Ladies Hockey A League to a whopping 21 points.

Cardinals, however, played their part in a heart-stopping show against a side that had netted 10 goals a week earlier.

Led by Rhonda Rawlins, Canaries were quickly on the attack, forcing the Cardinals defence to fend off several raids. Edna Mae Tuzo made a rare appearance in the Cardinals goal and it was through her efforts that several scoring attempts were stymied.

Though the first half proved fairly even, it was Canaries who held a 1-0 lead at the break after a scramble in front of the net gave Cameron the opportunity to slam a pass from Rawlins into the net.

The second half saw even more action as both teams pulled out all the stops.

Cameron, with the help of Michelle Ming, took advantage of a flat-footed and confused Cardinals defence by following up on a rebound off a shot from Emma Simmons to double the lead.

The other A League match between Bluebirds and Orioles ended 0-0 as both goalkeepers, veteran Carla Pedro and 1998 CAC team member, Fiona Doe, gave outstanding performances.

The pair fended off several goalscoring chances to keep clean sheets.

In the B League, Cardinals beat Canaries 2-0 in a clash of the top two teams, Heather Spinney scoring both goals.

Cardinals' back line was solid against a numerically overwhelming Canaries attack as Heidi Lynam took the lead from the back, penetrating a solid wall of yellow shirts with strong hit-outs to the wings.

Spinney, with the aid of the entire forward line, finally put the Cardinals on the board with a neat shot past the 'keeper.

The second half saw more pressure applied by Cardinals who were rewarded with a second Spinney goal.

But Cardinals weren't allowed to rest on their lead as Cameron kept their defence on their toes with some forceful attacking moves.

The final result made it six shutouts in a row for Cardinals who now lead the table by 11 points over second-placed Canaries.

Bluebirds and Orioles played to a scoreless draw in the other match, with Bluebirds maintaining fourth place and Orioles sixth.

In men's action on the weekend, Chameleons beat Rebels 2-0 in a game which saw them pile on the pressure from the outset. First-time goalkeeper Charles Markey pulled the Rebels through several hairy moments with an excellent performance.

One of the turning points in the match was the red card issued to Mel Lindo of Rebels which left them short-handed.

It was Peter Norris of Chameleons who finally managed to shoot past the inexperienced 'keeper with five minutes left on the clock. Captain John Dodd then captalised on a defensive error and sealed the win with a shot into the roof of the net.

Police could only manage to field eight men for their match against Wasps, but still held their own, especially in the first half when no goals were scored.

Wasps finally took control after the restart with captain Scott DeCosta scoring to break the deadlock.

Wasps capitalised on another opportunity when a penalty stroke was awarded to Manny Faria following a bad tackle by a Police defender. Bert Rodney faced off against 'keeper Davie Kerr and drilled a shot into the left corner for a 2-0 victory.

Bermuda ladies' under-21 squad lost their last practice match 2-1 against an Association side before the final squad of 18 players is chosen to represent Bermuda at the Junior Pan Am Games in Barbados this April.

The youngsters found the opening minutes tough against a more experienced opposition. A defensive foul-up on a short corner cost them as Cath Griffiths scored when keeper Alex Lewis was left exposed.

Strong midfield performances by Megan Leitch and Melissa Durrant brought the under-21s back into the game as Jenna Robinson foiled several attempts by Hayley Faries to force the ball over the line just before the half.

Reorganisation of the under-21s defence kept the Association team out before a shot into the roof of the net by Griffiths doubled the lead in the second half.

The juniors finally got on the scoresheet when Erica Frith scored with a first time shot.

This Sunday the final under-21 squad, minus four overseas players, will again take on a senior XI at 12.00 noon at National Sports Club.
