Carifta beckons Island athletes

Four qualifying track meets have been held so far and a handful of others remain -- including one on Saturday held in conjunction with the Telford Miles -- before the Bermuda team is finalised.

Shot putters Latanya Dickinson and Gabrielle Wilkinson, high jumper Raneika Bean and sprinter Tariq Hewey have already made the grade.

Dickinson surpassed the under-17 standard of 8.65 metres (28-feet, 41 -inches) on every occasion she has competed so far. Her best throw so far this year is 10.26 metres (33-feet, eight-inches).

Wilkinson also reached the mark for the under-17 shot, going well over the boys mark of 38-feet, 1 -inches. His best is 45-feet, 13 -inches, which he achieved last week, an improvement of more than 18 inches since last year.

Bean has cleared the under-17 girls high jump standard of 4-feet, 113 -inches this season. Her best last year was 5-feet-5 but the 14-year-old has jumped 5-feet-6 twice this year, not only qualifying her for Carifta but also the CAC Games in August.

The Berkeley Institute pair of Dickinson and Bean, both won medals in their Carifta debuts last year, Dickinson a silver and Bean a bronze.

Hewey equalled the mark of 10.9 seconds in the 100 metres and is .10 seconds outside the qualifying mark of 22.6 for the 200 metres.
