Carr sputters into the final 16
yesterday's first round of the Men's Amateur Championship at Mid Ocean.
Carr, who beat Mark Dupuy in last year's final, did not have things his own way against Morris before pulling off a one-up victory on the 18th hole.
Carr will now take on another local resident, Gary Carr (no relation) in one of eight matches scheduled for today.
Dupuy had an easier day of it, beating veteran Jack Wahl five-and-four to earn a meeting with Ian Page today.
One of the most interesting of today's matches will be the one between teenagers Aaron James and Canadian visitor Rory Scrymgeour.
At 14, James is one of the Island's top young players and 19-year-old Scrymgeour, a college student whose grandfather resides here, will have to watch him closely.
James was one of only eight players to shoot under 80 during Tuesday's qualifying round and yesterday he beat David Braham 3 and 2. Scrymgeour had a more comfortable 8 and 7 victory over David Pickering.
Three other favourites also survived yesterday's round. Former champion Dick Horne stopped Dave Purcell 5 & 3, Bill Jenks beat Greg Gaul 5 & 4 while Cy Kilgore got by John McManus one-up. Today Horne takes on Bermudian Eddie Marshall while Jenks, who tied with Horne and Gunnar Bennett on 74 in the medal round, plays Steve Plaskon and Kilgore meets Howard DeSilva.
Bennett plays Barrett Lightbourn after blowing away Bill Vahey eight-and-seven yesterday. In another match today Arthur Jones plays Blake Marshall in an all-Bermuda affair.
The women's tournament, which is being held with the men's for the first time, sees some familiar faces in today's semi-finals.
Madeline Joell will carry the Bermuda flag when she meets Lee Ann Vogel, a regular visitor, while Lisa (Griffin) McGill plays Reggie (Hawes) Parker in today's other semi-final.
Yesterday Joell beat Texan Caroline Creedmore, one of the lowest handicappers, on the 20th hole in the day's closest match. McGill won comfortably over Wendy Grierson 5 and 3 while Vogel beat Sandy Hutchings 5 and 4. Parker defeated Juliana Jack 2 and 1.
SWEET SWING -- Showing the poise of a veteran, Aaron James yesterday moved into the final 16 of the Bermuda Amateur Match Play Championships at Mid Ocean Club. He meets Rory Scrymgeour today.
