Champions Rangers end season in style

Southampton Rangers 161-2 A week after winning their first Premier Division title in 19 years, Southampton Rangers on Sunday ended the season in style with this emphatic eight-wicket victory over Flatts at Devonshire Rec.

What made it such a glorious finale was the speed with which they reached the victory target of 158, astonishingly getting the runs off just 14 overs.

Spearheading their run feast was Michael Brangman who struck a whirlwind 74 not out while Kwame Tucker contributed a brisk 35. Tucker and opener Keith Waiwright (9) had got them off to a solid start with an opening stand of 51.

Troy Dean was the only bowler allowed to get away with respectable figures, finishing with two for 38 from four overs.

Earlier Janeiro Tucker had limited Flatts to no more than a modest total, taking four for 36 off 10 overs. Skipper Olin Jones took two for nine off 7.2 overs and Clevie Wade two for 21 off six overs.

Southampton finished their league campaign with 13 wins and just one loss from 14 games, their lone setback coming in the first game of the season against Cleveland when they were not at full strength.

PHC 245-7 St. George's 246-2 James Pace's 56-ball century for PHC was overshadowed by Dexter Smith's effort for St. George's as the East Enders won comfortably at Sea Breeze Oval.

The eight wicket victory lifted St. George's to third in the standings, keeping their hopes of a defence of the Camel Cup alive, though they will have to beat St. David's -- without Smith who will be off the Island -- in their make-up match on Saturday.

Pace blasted the St. George's bowlers as his first 50 came up in only 24 balls. He was finally bowled by Ryan Steede for 103, the innings containing nine fours and seven sixes.

Mackie Crane was the pick of the St. Geroge's bowlers, taking three for 31 from 10 overs while Gregg Foggo bowled a tight 10 overs, going for just 16 runs.

Rangers sign off in style From Page 13 Dexter Smith upstaged Pace's effort with his 105 not out which came from 12 fours and five sixes as St. George's reached their target in just 36.2 overs.

Smith and Philip Pitcher (26) put on 58 for the first wicket before Smith and Sinclair Gibbons virtually completed the victory, adding 179 for the second wicket.

By the time Gibbons was out for 59, his first 50 of the season, St. George's were just nine runs from victory.

Somerset Bridge 181 Bailey's Bay 182-5 Skipper Charlie Marshall reached the 1,000-run mark this season with an aggressive 62 in leading Bailey's Bay to a five-wicket victory over Somerset Bridge at White Hill Field.

Marshall struck five sixes and four fours, while veteran Noel Gibbons, opening the innings, scored 35 and Stephen Outerbridge 30.

Top bowler for Bridge was Denzil Dill with three for 34 off nine overs.

For Bridge, David Jones was top scorer with 39 while Perry Saunders hit 28.

Young Outerbridge was the most impressive bowler for Bay with four wickets for 19 runs off 7.4 overs, while Gibbons took two for 20 off 10 overs.

Willow Cuts 213 St. David's 92 St. David's face a must-win situation against neighbours St. George's this weekend if they are have any chance to qualify for the Camel Cup for only the second time.

Presently there is a two-way tie for the last two places but a St. David's win on Saturday would create a three-way tie with two teams advancing.

St. David's didn't help their own cause on Sunday, only managing 92 in reply to Willow Cuts' total of 213. Joseph Matthews was high man for Cuts with 46 which included three fours and five sixes while Gladwin Edness scored 30 and Reggie Tucker Jr. 29.

Dale Fox came back to claim three lbw dismissals in his second spell to finish with four for 43 while Del Hollis took two for 42.

Opener Landro Minors led the St. David's batting with 25 as they crumbled from 51-3 to 92 all out. Charles Swan took four for 27 from 10 overs and Richard Basden two for 11 off 10.

Cleveland 196 Western Stars 197-8 Once again Gary Brangman's bat rescued Western Stars from the jaws of defeat just as Cleveland looked set to earn the distinction of being the only team to beat the top two teams in the league.

Cleveland, who started their season with victory over league champions Southampton Rangers, threatened to end their campaign with a win over the league runners-up when they had Stars 94-7 in search of a winning target of 196. But Brangman turned things around in dramatic fashion, sharing in vital partnerships for the eighth and ninth wickets to seal an unlikely victory for Stars.

First, he and Hasan Durham (19) added 59 for the eighth wicket before teenager Jekon Edness scored his most important three runs for the senior team, holding up his end as he and Brangman put on 44 for the unbroken ninth wicket.

Brangman finished with the top score of 59 not out while next highs were opener Andre Manders with 43 and Cleon Scotland 23. Things went wrong for Stars from the outset when the league's top scorer, Albert Steede, was dismissed first ball of the innings by Carlton Smith.

Spinner Hugh Murray was the best of the Cleveland bowlers, claiming five for 24 from 10 overs while Smith had two for 58 off 10.

Like Stars, the Cleveland number eight batsman -- captain Aaron Adams -- helped rescue them from early trouble as he scored 58 from five fours and four sixes. Adams added 52 for the eighth wicket with Grant Smith (7) in taking the score from 144 to 196 before the innings ended with the first-ball dismissal of Murray.

Openers Carlton Smith (33) and Curtis Jackson (26) gave Cleveland a start worth 61 runs before they slumped to 92-5. Brangman, Scotland and Durham all claimed two wickets.

Police 218 Somerset 178 Police ended their season on a winning note, beating Somerset by 40 runs at Somerset.

Captain Dennis Archer was high man with 48 while openers Terry Thomas and Andrew Rollins scored 28 and 24 and Stevie Lightbourne 27. Three Somerset bowlers, David Gibbs, Tony Cheeseman and Shane Hollis, took two wickets apiece.

Cheeseman was also high man for the West Enders, hitting 55, while Shaun Roberts scored 37 in the middle order and Wendell White 28. Thomas led the Police bowling with four for 37.

Warwick 196 Devonshire Rec. 120 Daniel Caines took four wickets for 57 and seven batsman chipped in with double-figure scores as Warwick defeated Devonshire Rec. by 76 runs at Southampton Oval.

Daniel Morgan and Reginald Pitcher top scored for Warwick, each scoring 28, though Pitcher remained unbeaten at the crease.

Wendell Swan led the Devonshire reply with 52.
