Clay's free kick magic sinks Colts

A moment of brilliance by striker Clay Smith enabled St. George's to come from behind and pick up their first league win of the season at the expense of fellow cellar dwellers Devonshire Colts at Frog Lane field yesterday.

On a day when the level of both teams' performance barely rose above mediocre it was the East Enders who were able to do just enough to secure much needed maximum points, lifting them out of the lower reaches.

Smith was largely invisible for the most part, but just as the sun poked through, lighting up previously dreary skies, so did Smith offer a satisfying ray in notching the winning goal that enabled he and his men to travel home in triumph.

In the 57th minute, with the score deadlocked at 1-1, Smith was fouled from behind near the top of the home team's penalty area. Rising to take his own free kick Smith demonstrated why he is arguably the best at set-pieces, delicately arching the ball over the six-man wall in front of goalkeeper Randy Darrell and into the unprotected near side.

Earlier the home side had drawn first blood when shoddy defending allowed Ellington Weldon in for his second goal of the season.

The chance was manufactured in the 33rd minute through the efforts of left-back Jomal Jones, who forced a deflected shot into the six-yard box and as sweeper Neil Paynter and team-mate Quinton Francis waited for each other to clear, Weldon gratefully took the opportunity to nip between the pair and place the ball past an exposed Troy Hall.

For Devonshire the glory was short-lived as St. George's equalised 11 minutes later on account of a stunning blast from left-back Dean Bailey.

Again a defensive blunder set the stage as a cross from the right by Phillip Bailey was miskicked by Devonshire's centre-back Makonnen Hollis near the penalty spot and trickled to a lurking Bailey, who crashed a one-time, scorcher into Darrell's right corner.

For first year St. George's coach Herbie Bascome the victory came amid mixed blessings as he was ordered from the bench by referee Richard Knight in the 75th minute for protesting.
