Clueless Eagles outclassed

This is going to be a long, long season for Somerset Eagles. Only six games into the league programme, and they are playing like a side already doomed.

All of which makes playing the remaining 12 games dangerous for whomever they face as they run the risk of seeing their level fall to that of the White Hill tenants.

In a match that at best can be described as a poor advertisement for First Division soccer, Village used two goals from Nakia Smith and Sean Dill to win a one-sided affair. They could have scored twice as many but in the end got only what they deserved as they too contributed to a dreadful display that only fleetingly gave one the impression that thought goes into the week's preparation.

Eagles' plight was worsened by the second-half dismissal of player/coach Gary Mallory was who sent off for head-butting Dill away from the action. That it took Village 26 minutes to score was a surprise in itself.

Kevin Grant `beat' the offside trap in the fourth minute -- he actually appeared a mile offside -- but showed all and sundry why he is a defender with a weak effort that Cordell Gilbert turned away.

Right after that Dill was presented with a better opportunity after Nakia Smith crossed with Gilbert stranded. But his header with just one defender on the line was wide.

Dill finally broke through in comfortable fashion, rounding the 'keeper before slotting into the empty net.

The best move of the day brought Village's second goal, Elliott Jennings providing a perfect cross from the left for Smith to power home with a back post header.

The lunacy of the second half saw Village several times more threaten the Eagles goal before selfish play and unnecessary bickering proved their downfall. And to top it off, goalkeeper Dwayne Adams was twice called upon to take free kicks in dangerous positions. Mallory's ejection came in the 56th minute, seconds after Eagles had made a double substitution.

Gilbert produced a good save to deny sub Kaiwon Dill in the 61st minute after Jamel Smith crossed, but there was nothing he could do to thwart the Smith combination three minutes later. Jamel beat an Eagles offside trap which was poorly conceived throughout and crossed from the left for Nakia to net his second.

Adams' first real action came in the 78th minute when he dived to turn away an Everett Wellman shot that looked to be going wide. And Dill closed out the scoring with nine minutes remaining. Nakia Smith knocked a poor goal kick first time into the striker's path and Dill did well to beat Frankie Smith and then power a drive past Gilbert's right hand.
