Coach Kenny remains cautious

allow complacency to set in ahead of the team's second leg Caribbean Championship tie against the United States Virgin Islands on Friday.

Failure of a couple of players to commit to training, which resumed two weeks ago after a break, left Thompson with the decision to make some changes to the training squad.

Wrapping up the qualifying tie with USVI should be a mere formality for the Bermuda team, but Thompson is still setting high standards.

The squad depart today with a four-goal cushion from the home leg and should make certain of their trip to Haiti for the Caribbean Under-15 Championship round-robin finals in late July which will also involve Haiti, Martinique and St. Kitts.

"We have been guarding against complacency in our preparation, although 4-0 is a good position to be in,'' said Thompson yesterday. "The second leg still has to be played. We'll be trying to achieve a good intensity and at the same time play with common sense.

"We have to use a sensible approach that we're 4-0 up and we don't have to be overly adventurous. We certainly won't be overly cautious either.'' Anticipating playing well into the summer, Thompson gave his players some time off after the first match.

"We don't want to speak too much about Haiti at this time, we would like to take care of what we have to do on Friday first,'' stressed the coach.

"We have to get over this weekend and assess the situation after the weekend and go forward from there.'' It is expected that Haiti, also with home advantage, will be the favourites in the finals. "It's difficult to guage, especially youth football,'' added Thompson. "Just because a team might be strong in senior football doesn't mean they are necessarily strong in youth football and vice-versa.'' Thompson admitted to having made some changes to the training squad because of problems with players not training, with one newcomer travelling with the team today.

"I have made some changes to the squad as a result of various circumstances,'' Thompson disclosed. "I had one or two problems with players in terms of training so we had to replace those players, but that's the nature of what we're dealing with in football in the national team.

"We set rules and regulations for the programme and players have to live up to those standards. No player's position is cast in stone.'' The team have been training five times a week in the last two weeks and "that's how it's going to be for the entire summer'', Thompson warned.

The team played a practice match against Fire Service on Monday night, losing 2-1 to a late goal. "From our perspective we simulated what we're up against in the USVI match,'' said the coach. "We stated to the players `this is USVI and we are leading 4-0'. The aim was try to beat Fire Service and failing that not lose by three or four goals.

"We came through okay and now we have to put the real thing into practice on Friday.''
