Coaching reshuffle continues

Foggo's replacement, and have looked to Neil Paynter instead to fill the void.

The off-season coaching reshuffling continued with former Somerset defender Josef Gooden replacing Larry Hunt as coach of the Trojans while Darrell has signed to stay with relegated Southampton Rangers.

Darrell, Bermuda's must successful national coach after leading the country to the World Cup qualifying round two years ago, originates from St. George's and showed some interest when approached by the club.

However, he later decided against the move which would have required considerable travelling from his Southampton home.

Anthony Stoneham will be Darrell's assistant at Rangers while former Bermuda national team captain Dennis Brown will serve in that capacity at Somerset.

Meanwhile, another defender, Paynter, will make his senior coaching debut next season.

Paynter confirmed yesterday he will concentrate solely on coaching next season as he has not recovered sufficiently from a serious knee injury to play as well.

Foggo has quit the coaching post after four years, having succeeded in getting the team back into the First Division and keeping them there in the last two seasons.

"I feel I achieved what I set out to achieve,'' said Foggo. "I think Neil is going to do an excellent job, judging by the number of meetings we've had and by the programme he's got lined up.'' More coaching changes are expected before the start of the new season as clubs also finalise signings. Other First Division clubs seeking new coaches include North Village, Boulevard, Vasco and PHC. Darrell's decision to stay with Rangers is somewhat surprising. He had been courted by a number of clubs after finishing an interim period as coach of Rangers in the second half of last season when they were eventually relegated to the Second Division.

Yesterday Darrell revealed that going back to St. George's where he started out as a player was tempting, but he said the situation at Southampton also looked attractive and that he was staying there because of the rapport he had with both the players and officials at the club.

"I'm staying with Southampton Rangers because nothing happened last year to discourage me,'' said Darrell.

"There wasn't enough time to do much during a short period, but I did develop a good relationship with everybody, the players were quite comfortable with me and there is certainly the possibility of a good future there with the programme that they have in mind,'' noted Darrell.

For the first time in many seasons the club intends to have several junior teams in addition to the mini minors and some of their key senior players have decided to assist in coaching as well.

Wolves will hold a meeting for all senior players and those interested in joining the club at Elliott School today, starting at 7 p.m.
