Colts get ready to celebrate
St. George's to wrap up the First Division league title.
But tonight at BAA Field (9.00) the current First Division leaders should have few fears about defeating the East Enders and so finally taste league success for the first time since 1973.
In fact, a draw against St.George's should be enough for Colts as that would put them on 36 points, the maximum Vasco -- the only other team in the title race -- can finish with from their final two matches. And Vasco would also have to make up 10 goals in the process.
On current form, Devonshire Colts should win hands down, but in the back of their minds will be caution as prior to their 7-0 victory at Wellington Oval in November, St. George's had got the better of their long-time rivals.
In eight meetings between the teams between 1992-93 and last season St.
George's had won six times, including the Friendship final last April which turned out to be their first major trophy.
But since then things have gone horribly wrong for St. George's, as they slumped from third in the standings to bottom of the heap this term...all in the space of 12 months.
St. George's haven't won a single match this season and are headed back to the Second Division for the first time since the 1991-92 programme. The fact that they have nothing to lose is what worries Colts captain Shannon Burgess more than anything.
"In the past, no matter what type of streak we've been on, St. George's were usually the team that stopped us,'' said Burgess. "I'm sure they don't want us to win the league against them and plus they haven't won a game all season.
"I would rather play a top team in a game like this because of the mental attitude of the players. Even walking around town everybody is saying `congratulations, you've got it' but it's not over yet.
"If the guys can keep their heads on their shoulders and not think it's going to be an easy match, then we should be alright.'' Ironically that last victory in St. George's provided the belief in the Colts camp that this team might just be championship material. Now against that same team they can silence their critics and finally land a trophy. Colts went to the top of the First Division that day and have remained title contenders ever since, even while bowing out of the Friendship and FA Cup and losing to PHC in the Dudley Eve final.
"When we beat St. George's and went top of the tables we realised that maybe we can win this thing,'' Burgess said.
"Even though we beat them 7-0 we played consistent the whole game. We played at a high level and nobody went away from the game plan. To me that showed we were a championship team.'' Colts fans might point to the contribution of former St. George's goalkeeper Troy Hall as the key in their transformation from seventh to first place, but Burgess thinks the difference this season has been in the team's ability to find the net.
"The difference between last year and this year is we're scoring goals,'' said the captain.
"Last year we were ranked one of the top teams in defence and the same again this year, but this year we are top in offence and that's been the biggest difference.'' Vasco players will know tonight whether their match against PHC tomorrow will hold any importance for them. For the eighth-placed Zebras there is only a slim chance of qualifying for the Martonmere Cup next season.
Other matches tomorrow will see third and fourth-placed Dandy Town and North Village battling at St. John's in a dress rehearsal for the Friendship final while Boulevard take on Devonshire Cougars at St. David's.
The important Second Division matches will be at Devonshire Rec. and Somerset where Wolves need to beat Hotels (3.00) to stay in the promotion hunt while Somerset Trojans close out their season at home to Hamilton Parish.
The Trojans presently lead Wolves by three points but Wolves still have two matches remaining. Wolves were the first team to beat Hotels this season when they stopped them in the FA Cup semi-final, and now they will have to do it again if they are to join them in the First Division.
Somerset lost their first meeting to Hamilton Parish and cannot afford to come away with anything less than three points tomorrow. Wolves' final match will be against Social Club next weekend.
The two other matches tomorrow will see Prospect taking on BAA and Paget hosting Somerset Eagles.
