Colts surprise Friendship champions
Champions Dandy Town became the latest casualty in the Friendship Trophy when Devonshire Colts recorded their first win of the season last night at BAA Field.
And to make the feat all the more astonishing they not only survived the final 70 minutes of the match with 10 men but also scored their winner while short-handed.
With college student Quincy Aberdeen back in the Colts team they played with more determination from the outset and within 80 seconds had taken the lead when youngster Tajmal Webb broke the deadlock after the Town defence buckled under pressure.
That set the tone for yet another thrilling match in this competition as, not surprisingly, Town quickly found first gear and started to mount some raids of their own. However, Colts could easily have been 2-0 up by then as in the fourth minute a perfect ball from Craig Smith into the box saw Webb connect at the far post but hit the ball straight to 'keeper Cymande Davis.
Town were back level on 10 minutes when Ascento Russell scored at the far post after a move by Town down the left side. Just seconds earlier Russell smashed a shot against the crossbar after Walter Musson whipped the ball in from the left.
Action was switching from one end to the other as Mark (Beaver) Ray sent in a long range shot that Davis turned around a post in the 15th minute. At the other end Musson put an effort into the sidenetting. Then Craig Smith volleyed just wide. It was all happening.
Colts looked to have suffered a double whammy in the 20st minute when fullback Keenan Burchall handled a goalbound shot on the line following a corner and was shown the red card. However, Town failed to capitalise as Musson's penalty was saved by Randy Darrell to his right before a defender cleared.
Town were finding it difficult to take control of the match and they nearly fell behind in the 36th minute when Mark Ray's shot smashed against the cross from an indirect freekick inside the box after Davis was blown down for picking up the ball after initially stopping it with his hands.
Colts' determination paid off in the form of the winning goal in the 39th minute -- a brilliant struck freekick from deep on the left side by Craig Smith which found the far top corner. Poor positioning restricted Davis to a spectator role as the ball whistled past him.
Town had their share of chances in the second half as they searched frantically for the tying goal. And those efforts were frustrated by some solid defending by Colts' defence led by captain Shannon Burgess and Makonnen Hollis in the middle.
The ball hit the far post in the 64th minute following a Musson corner on the right and minutes later substitute Joey Weeks just failed to get on the end of Troy Lewis' cross into the box.
Colts still had some attacking left in them and created some of the better late opportunities as Craig Smith twice fed Damon Ming down the left side. The first effort was lifted over the bar from a sharp angle and the second in the 82nd minute saw substitute Sullivan Phillips just failed to get a boot to the cross.
Colts held on for four minutes of injury time before the final whistle brought smiles to their faces.
