Commercial clubs set to meet Cup giants

Ireland Rangers, big winners on Sunday with a 6-0 hammering of Bermuda Pest Control, take on St. George's All-Stars in the first match of a double-header at White Hill Field on November 9.

Commercial A Division leaders, Fire Service, meet the winners of tonight's Valley-Robin Hood tie (BAA Field, 9.00) in the first of two matches at PHC Stadium while the other match between Commercial teams sees Forties take on Exiles at BAA Field.

Meanwhile, one of the most interesting games in the next round will be between BAA Wanderers and Second Division leaders Wolves.

East end rivals St. George's and St. David's have been drawn against each other in the FA Cup for the second straight season, again at Wellington Oval.

Prospect, enjoying a good start to the season in the Second Division, entertain the other Commercial team, Lobster Pot at Police Field.

Somerset Eagles face a tough match against promotion favourites Hamilton Parish at White Hill Field.

HOOD RETURN TO CUP ACTION SOC Hood return to cup action Only 72 hours after winning the Commercial League A Cup, Robin Hood play another key match tonight.

This time it's in the first round of the FA Cup, with the winner of their game against Valley advancing to the second round of the Island's soccer's biggest tournament.

On Saturday night, Hood beat BAA 2-1 at Somerset Cricket Club. Hood and BAA were the top two teams in their division last year.

Jarlath McCabe, with a first-half penalty, and Alan Mooney, 15 minutes from time, scored for Hood before Kevin Hanson pulled BAA close with an 87th minute spot kick.

The Commercial League B Cup final takes place on Thursday, with North Village Rams meeting Fire Service at 7.00 p.m.

SQUASH SQU Play got underway on Sunday in the BIAS Educational squash tournament with 43 parent/child teams competing for a $1,500 purse.

The event will see teams play once a month until December in a round robin format with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals scheduled for the weekend of January 17-18.

Eleven divisions are being contested on handicap with the children playing the first three games of each match and the parents following suit.

In the opening day's play, eleven year-old Kristen Law swept an improving Andrew Osborne 3-0 as father Bruce lost 2-1 to Tommy Osborne in one of the closest matches, while Christopher Sgobba and Donate Sgobba combined for a 5-1 win over Sean and Chris Harvey.

In another good match, Richard Arnold scored a close 2-1 win over Justin Robinson whose uncle, Malcolm Furbert then defeated Carolyn Arnold 3-0.

Director of Squash at the Devonshire courts, Jane Parker, was enthusiastic about the tournament.

"It's great to see so many parents and relatives come out to partner their children,'' said Parker. "Some of the adults are playing for the first or second times in their lives and although they may be aching for the next few days, they're keen to play.'' The next round of matches is scheduled for Sunday, November 19, from 12.00 noon through to 6.00 p.m.
