Contenders gun for cuts

last round of open cricket matches was rained out on June 28, the day leaders Willow Cuts were to travel to second-placed Bailey's Bay. Just one point will be separating the two teams when Cuts entertain fifth-placed Cleveland and Bay host struggling St. George's at Sea Breeze Oval.

Cleveland, just 11 points out of first place themselves, will be bidding for an upset tomorrow against a Willow Cuts team that produced the shock upset of the season when they dismissed Devonshire Rec. for 55 on June 21 to move into first place.

Albert Simons has been Cleveland's best bowler this season and if he can add to his 29 wickets -- at an average of 12.37 -- Cleveland have a good chance.

Captain Dexter Basden has been Willow Cuts' most productive batsman.

Bailey's Bay, without Noel Gibbons, should still be favoured at home against St. George's. Bay are led in the batting department by left-handers Charlie Marshall and Glenn Smith while the St. George's batting is led by captain Wendell Smith.

Captain Chris Smith is one Bay batsman who must be concerned with his form leading up to Eastern Counties next weekend. The opening batsman has scored just 94 runs in 12 innings this season, with a top score of 18 against Flatts.

Third and fourth-placed Western Stars and Devonshire Rec., the defending champions, are also within striking distance of the top spot. Devonshire Rec.

will also be travelling to the east, to meet Hamilton Parish at Wellington Oval while Stars are at home to sixth-placed Police in the day's top match.

St. David's, fresh from their first Benson and Hedges triumph last weekend, should not have too much trouble with Warwick at Lord's. Warwick meet Southampton Rangers in the first round of the Western Counties today while St.

David's are set to open the defence of the Eastern Counties title in a week's time. For some of their league players this will be the last opportunity to impress the selectors.

Nationals could gain a couple of places in the middle of the table when they take on Social Club at home. They suffered more disappointment to their season last weekend when they were beaten by St. David's in the Benson and Hedges semifinal, leaving them now with only a respectable placing in the league to aim for. The Lewis brothers, Darrin and Jason, have been their most in-form batsmen while Chris Wright has led the bowling with 26 wickets.

In other matches, Flatts take on Somerset Bridge at Devonshire Rec. while Southampton Rangers host Somerset at Southampton Oval.
