And so it is with tonight's (9 p.m.) confrontation, as Wolves and Devonshire Cougars are thrust into the fighting pit that is The Den for a battle that could go either way.

A single point separates the two sides, with Wolves currently sitting fifth in the standings at 13 points, compared to 12 for Cougars.

Current form sees Cougars coming off a solid -- if not pretty -- performance against league leaders Dandy Town, where they snatched a share of the spoils, a result that will have instilled an added degree of confidence into the psyche of player/coach Shawn Smith's youthful brigade. In fact, despite the lowly rank, Cougars remain undefeated for the year 2001.

Meanwhile, Wolves have flattered to deceive so often that it appears to have become part of the team chemistry, a suicidal mixture for which coach Dennis Brown needs an antidote.

With three fixtures remaining, both are out of contention for the championship -- Cougars mathematically, Wolves logically -- yet, victory by either would all but confirm a Martonmere Cup berth, which goes to the top six finishers.

The match will be preceded by a Women's Division affair between Wolves Girls and Rude Girls (7 p.m.).

Sunday's Premier Division contest involving North Village and Dandy Town will serve a dual purpose, with Village pegging the occasion as a time of dedication to four former players now deceased.

Half-time will see the memories of Charlie Emery, Dennis (Man) Warren, Winston Paynter and Lawrence (Stickers) Hendrickson being honoured via presentations to family members.

Three of the four were killed through accidents involving motor vehicles, with Paynter and Warren both involved in bike collisions, and Emery during a boat crash. Henderson, well known for his contribution as a gombey troupe leader, died suddenly from a heart attack.
