Cougars blasted into submission

St. George's Colts are not alone...the First Division has another team just as bad as they are defensively! PHC Zebras made that statement last night at Devonshire Rec. when they hammered last season's Second Division champions into submission with a result that nearly matched the 7-0 hammering St. George's suffered at the hands of Vasco in the Martonmere Cup.

Already Cougars, like Colts, are looking relegation certainties unless they can improve on their defensive frailties. In three league matches they have conceded 13 goals at 4.33 a game while St. George's have let in 23 in five league and cup games at a rate of 4.60 per outing.

And though PHC had all but settled the points by halftime when they ran up a 4-0 lead, it can be argued that the Zebras were not necessarily four goals better after the first 45 minutes. For every chance they converted, Cougars missed at the other end.

PHC took the lead in the 13th minute later when Winston Trott scored at the second attempt after Sheridan Ming had set up the chance.

A brilliant series of short passes at the other end by Cougars resulted in captain Wali Salaam getting into the box before his shot was blocked for a corner.

Cougars paid the price for another miss when Michael Trott made it 2-0 for PHC. Right from the kickoff Cougars went back into the missing mode when Campbell somehow shot wide of an open goal after breaking through.

Philip Clarke had a goalward shot cleared by Devon Brangman and then hit the crossbar with another effort late in the half.

PHC gave Cougars two more lessons in scoring in the 43rd and 45th minutes when Steede scored from close range and then Ming tucked a cross from Michael Trott inside the far post.

Clarke did not return for the second half because of a recurring hamstring injury, and just 80 seconds after the restart Raynel Lightbourne got in on the scoring act with the first of his two goals. It was the best goal of the goal as he pounced on a weak backpass by Cory Smith and smashed a shot from the edge of the box that hit the underside of the crossbar before dropping behind the line.

Cougars' problems continued with the 53rd minute sending off of Galvin Butterfield for a crunching tackle on Steede as he tried to race through on the left.

From the freekick, Lightbourne chipped a shot against the bar. PHC lost a defensive player, too, when goalkeeper Robinson got the worst of a collision with Campbell and went off with a shoulder injury.

His replacement, Jay Smith, did not have much to do as PHC did most of the attacking.

Cougars were fading fast and the sixth goal went in in the 67th minute when Lightbourne beat goalkeeper Leon Place to a pass into the box.

PHC were the overnight leaders on goal difference, but all the other teams will be in action today and tomorrow, starting with a clash tonight between Vasco and North Village at PHC Stadium.
