Cougars drop crucial points
Bottom team Devonshire Cougars blew a chance to help their own survival hopes and now must rely on other teams to do them a favour this weekend. And whether they cam pull out of the bottom in the last two games of the season will depend on how quickly they can bounce back from this lethargic defeat. Last night they still showed signs of not having recovered from last weekend's loss to Devonshire Colts in the semi-final of the FA Cup. This victory enabled Rangers to avenge their recent loss to Cougars in the FA Cup, even though Rangers struggled to field a full squad, with top scorer Rohaan Simons and Pernell Brangman both missing the match because of their religious beliefs.
Still, they had enough in reserve to inflict the 10th loss on Cougars this season.
With matches to come against Devonshire Colts and Vasco, Cougars will need to win both of them to stay up.
Their problems began after only two minutes when Janeiro Tucker, playing at sweeper, scored directly from a freekick deep on the right side. His intended cross went inside the far post with goalkeeper Tori Henry out of position.
Cougars suffered another setback when striker Philip Clarke went off injured midway through the first half and minutes later defender Wendell Smith had to go off for treatment for a gash in his lead before returning.
After Derek Lowe just failed to connect with a ball into the box from Jason Raynor, Rangers were put under pressure early in the second half as Cougars stepped up their game. Mark Smith, who replaced Clarke, poked a shot just wide after a break in the Rangers defence.
And then after substitute Sergio Goater blasted over the top after being fed by Aljame Zuill inside the box, Rangers made Cougars pay with two goals in the space of five minutes to seal the win.
The second goal came after a Cougars move broke down. From the quick break, Kwame Tucker ran the ball around the advancing Henry to score into an empty net in the 73rd minute. Minutes later Sheridan Ming broke through a flatfooted defence with a burst of speed and then slotted a low shot past the 'keeper.
Social Club 2 St. George's 1 Young Men's Social Club's picked up only their second win in the league when they got by Shield finalists, St. George's, in the opening match at Devonshire Rec.
Erick Dunkley had given Social Club the lead after just 10 minutes, with Damon Robinson equalising in the 31st minute.
Desai Jones earned the win when he put his shot into the roof of the net from an acute angle on the left side in the 65th minute.
