Cricket nationals looking good
Guyana Select 76 Glenn Smith came close to scoring a century for the Bermuda national team new Shell/Sandals entrants picked up a 122-run win over a Guyana select squad in a practice match yesterday.
Opening the innings with Clay Smith, Glenn scored 98 not out, dominating a stand of 52, of which Clay scored only five on a slow turning wicket.
Glenn was then overcome by the humidity and went off the field before returning and batting through the remainder of the 50 overs in the Bermuda innings.
"He really blazed away very early and batted beautifully and then the heat got to him,'' said coaching advisor Bob Simpson last night.
Roger Trott, batting at number five, scored 40 not out while Charlie Marshall fell for 10 and captain Albert Steede scored 25.
The Guyana Select, containing a couple of former Guyana internationals, were bowled out for 76 as Barbados-born fast bowling pair, Anthony Braithwaite and Roger Blades led the bowling. They were 4-35 at one stage.
Braithwaite claimed five for 16 from 5.5 overs and Blades two for seven from five, while good support was also received from seamers Clevie Wade (1-6 in eight overs) and Janeiro Tucker (1-33 from eight) and spinner Kameron Fox who had 1-8 from five overs.
The match was played at a ground called Everest which, Simpson says, is considered as the second best in Georgetown next to the Test ground Bourda.
Tomorrow the Bermudians play a second warmup match at Demera, which is the home ground of former West Indies greats Lance Gibbs and Clive Lloyd.
The team arrived in Guyana at 1 a.m. local time on Sunday -- having left Bermuda on the 7 a.m. flight the day before.
They will train again today prior to tomorrow's match when Arnold Manders, Bruce Perinchief and Jeff Richardson, who sat out yesterday's match, will see action.
Bermuda make their debut in the Shell/Sandals limited overs tournament on Friday when they play the Windward Islands in the first of six round-robin group matches. Guyana and Barbados are also in the group.
