Cup Match chief defends ad stance
Cup Match adverts by John Barritt and Sons.
He said big business could not be expected to advertise for free and that it would have to consult with the clubs rather than get concession holders to put up adverts in exchange for free goods.
And Mr. Smith claimed that the firm had been told a deal could be worked out but had snubbed the offer.
Mr Smith said: "This year $85 million was issued for Cup Match but the clubs really don't benefit because most of the advertising is to big business.
"All that money is spent but what does Cup Match get out of it? We have to try to make sure that Cup Match gets something out of it.
"Big business is basically taking over, infiltrating Cup Match. We are just trying to ensure clubs get what they should be getting, get what they deserve.
"All we are asking for is communication between big business and the clubs.
"Over the years big business has basically got adverts for free. I understand they want to advertise but it must be with the permission of the property holders.
"Otherwise they are advertising illegally.
"I said this in 1998 but they don't seem to remember. We aren't desperate for money, it's not a money issue. There's a principle involved. We have to protect our rights.'' He said Metro Mineral Water had been allowed to advertise at Cup Match after consulting with the club but Barritt's had failed to respond.
He said: "I have talked with Metro but I have not discussed it with Mr.
Barritt because he doesn't want to discuss it with me.
"I am willing to communicate and come to an agreement with him.
"They think I am the villian because I have taken a stand. I am not the villian, I will work with anyone who wants to work with Somerset Cricket Club.''
