Cyclist sustains serious injuries in collision

A story in yesterday's newspaper should have quoted a Police spokesman stating that a Police officer suspected of impaired driving was alleged to have left the scene, not that he had left the scene.

A Paget man is in hospital with serious head and neck injuries after he collided with another cyclist early on Saturday morning.

Harbour Road was closed to traffic for three hours after the 30-year-old apparently crossed over from the west bound to the east bound lane and struck a 47-year-old Sandys man, who only received a cut to his leg.

The Paget man was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital by ambulance and is in the intensive care unit in critical condition.

Police shut down the flow of traffic on Harbour Road from between 2.30 a.m.

and 5.30 a.m. while the accident was investigated.

Police report a 36-year-old Smith's Parish resident was intending to do the right thing on Saturday when he stopped his cycle to assist what he thought was an injured person, slumped on the road.

But as he began to offer assistance, the "victim'' turned aggressor and pointed the slingshot at the cycle rider and threatened him, demanding money.

A wallet containing cash was handed over and the man's cycle was also taken.

The incident occurred on Parson's Lane, Devonshire around 5.30 p.m.

BOUNCER REPORTS ASSAULT CRM Bouncer reports assault Two men are being sought by Police after they allegedly assaulted a bouncer at the Escape Nightclub, early Saturday.

The bouncer reports he was hit in the face after he became involved in a confrontation with one man at closing time.

He was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of cuts to his nose and eye areas and sustained swelling to the face.

He told Police the confrontation started just after 3 a.m. and he was ambushed with the bottle.

A second assailant joined the first and both began punching the bouncer.

Police are making "active inquiries'' into the incident.

The female complainant reported the thief got into her apartment through an insecure door on Friday morning she found her multicoloured purse gone.

POLICE CHIEF LAUNCHES PROBE INTO IMPAIRED OFFICER POL AC Police chief launches probe into impaired officer Police Commissioner Jean-Jaques Lemay has launched an internal investigation after a Police officer was suspected of causing an accident while driving his unmarked car over the legal alcohol limit.

Police spokesman Coleman Easton said Friday the officer left the scene of the collision before authorities arrived and had a chance to question him.

He explained the accident occurred on July 14 between the officer's car and the car of civilian woman.

He said there were no reports of any injury to either of them but added: "Allegations have arisen that the Police officer may have been drinking.

Mr. Easton said: "He failed to remain at the scene until the incident had been dealt with.'' He said Mr. Lemay looked upon the matter "very seriously'' and explained: "At present there are both an internal investigation and a road traffic investigation underway.

"If charges are recommended then a file will be prepared for review by the Department of Public Prosecutions.'' GOVERNMENT SEEKS PUBLIC VOICE ON OPEN SPACES ENV SUR Government seeks public voice on open spaces Residents will have the opportunity to impact government policy on open spaces and development with a mass mailing this week of a questionnaire on the subject.

Under chairman Rev. Wilbur Lowe, the Open Spaces Committee of the Ministry of the Environment has mailed out the questionnaire to measure public concern about the rate of development.

The Committee also seeks public advice on a range of environmental issues, including whether high rise buildings should be allowed, the right of public access to beaches and zoning issues.

The public are asked to participate and return the questionnaire quickly by mailing it -- without stamps -- back to the Planning Department.
