Devonshire looking for revenge
to Police, the former powers of the competition have their best chance to turn the tables.
It was on June 6, 1988 that Police won by one wicket in a tense match at Devonshire Rec. as tempers flared in the Devonshire camp over controversial decisions. Now the neighbours will battle again today, this time at Police Field, for the right to meet Western Stars in the final on June 20.
CRICKET PREVIEW CRI Police easily got by Social Club last weekend in the first round as they began their second year as defending champions. Their toughest tests await them in the next two rounds. First, though, they have to contend with a Devonshire Rec. team hungry for a first win of the season. They are even more determined to win the Central Counties Cup again, a competition they used to dominate up to the 1980s.
Police beat them in the first round of the Knockout Cup and should be favourites again. The champions are weaker than they were a year ago following the departure of Roger Blades, Stevie Lightbourne, Dwayne Leverock and Donovan Livingston. However, they still have very capable match winners in captain Dennis Archer and Ferdinand Thorne.
Devonshire will rely on Dexter Smith, Anthony Amory and Leon Place for runs while Amory, Place and Winston Trott Jr will bear bowling responsibilities.
Open cricket returns tomorrow with Devonshire hosting league leaders St.
George's. After two rounds of competition St. George's are the only team with a victory and they will be favourites against the home team who have drawn two.
Champions Bailey's Bay are at home to Southampton Rangers at Sea Breeze Oval while Western Stars travel west to meet Willow Cuts at Somerset and Cleveland take on Police at Wellington Oval.
The Under-16 League match between Devonshire and Warwick today is at Warwick Sec. field and not Warwick Academy.
