Disappointed Jones misses the cut
effect on senior professional Eardley Jones yesterday as he shot an 11 over par 82 and failed to make the cut in the British Senior Open.
Jones, needing to shoot around 74 to stay in the tournament, failed to improve on his opening round of 77 and was eliminated.
"I was the second last group off at 2.30 so just hanging around waiting got to me a bit,'' Jones explained yesterday from his hotel near the Royal Lytham St. Anne's Golf Club in Blackpool.
"About half the field was in by the time I left and they were saying a (two round score) 152 or 154 was going to make it, so I would have had to shoot about a three over par 74,'' Jones explained.
Jones, competing in his first British Senior Open, said he had thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
"I just missed a lot of greens and if you miss greens here you go into deep bunkers. I knew what I had to shoot but it was a much better day and a lot of guys had better scores.
"I was feeling good about making the cut,'' he said. "It was a great experience and hopefully I'll be back again next year.'' The top 55 players will play to a finish tomorrow. There are just three amateurs in the field, but one of them, Bryan Carter of England, is leading the way with a two-round score of 138. Carter is a member of the Royal Lytham St. Anne's Golf Club where the Open is being held.
Two strokes behind and tied for second are Bob Charles of New Zealand and Neil Coles of England while a further stroke back on 141 is Peter Butler of England. Arnold Palmer remains in contention on 142.
Kim Marshall shot the best round of the day yesterday to tie for third place in the Optimist Junior World Championships in San Diego, California.
A one-under-par 73 put her equal third with Skyli Yamada of Utah.
The pair were one stroke behind Luisa Cuartas of Colombia, who finished four shots adrift of the winner Erika Hayashida of Peru.
Gilberto Morales of Venezuela pipped favourite Tiger Woods for the title in the boys 15-17 division, in which Bermuda's Chris Garland failed to qualify for the final two rounds.
