Double-take for squash duo
best in this year's Commonwealth Games.
And for the first time ever, the dynamic duo of number one player Tommy Sherratt and number two Nick Kyme will pair up for a doubles competition.
"It's the first time that squash has been a Commonwealth sport, so it's a big thing for them to have made it,'' said coach Roger Sherratt.
Both players leave on Saturday to begin the lengthy trek to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the site of this year's games.
Sherratt said the pair's recent victories in several international competitions -- especially a five of six win against traditionally strong Jamaica in the recent Rose Bowl -- ensured their placement.
But he admitted that his son Tommy and Kyme had little experience playing as a doubles team.
"They don't usually get the opportunity to play with each other,'' he explained.
And there is no double court in Bermuda.
However, Sherratt went on to say that most of the participating countries had a similar lack of experience.
"This is the first time that I've ever heard of doubles being played on an international level,'' he said.
During the Games, tournaments will be held in pools of four countries, so players will have at least three matches, said Sherratt.
"We're all very psyched up to do the very best we can for Bermuda,'' he continued.
"All the best squash playing countries of the world are going to be there -- and all the best squash players.
"Realistically it would be very nice to be drawn against one of the smaller countries in the first round, but it will still be a very good experience,'' he said.
The squash tournament is scheduled to begin two days before the opening ceremony on September 9.
