Dudley race goes down to the wire

Division soccer matches this weekend have plenty at stake as six teams continue to chase four spots.

It's so tight between top teams Devonshire Colts and Vasco, and Southampton Rangers and North Village in mid-table, that the standings could change dramatically after this weekend's matches which signal the half-way point of the league season.

Colts, by virtue of of a superior goal difference over Vasco, are assured of a spot provided they don't lose heavily to Devonshire Cougars at Devonshire Rec.

That's because Rangers and Village in fifth and sixth -- they play each other at Southampton Oval -- cannot both finish in the top four.

Cougars may not be able to qualify for the Dudley Eve but that won't stop them chasing maximum points at home against their former next door neighbours as a further three points would put them in a comfortable mid-table position for the Christmas break.

Colts' progress since last season has been impressive, as this time last year they still had not won in the league after eight games and were sitting in ninth place. Now they are in a position to go into the Dudley Eve -- they were the first team to win the trophy in 1978-79 -- as the league leaders.

Defending champions Vasco, who were among the first qualifiers last season, face a tricky away match against Boulevard at St. David's. However, if Boulevard don't improve on their recent performance against Cougars then Vasco won't have too much trouble qualifying.

Eighth-placed Boulevard are also out of the running but they will need the points so as to keep a gap between themselves and improving St. David's in ninth. The availability of Dwight Warren and Albert Caisey should make them more competitive.

St. David's travel to PHC Stadium tonight (9.00) hoping their good form of late, which included wins over Dandy Town and Southampton Rangers, continues.

PHC also have something to play for as they can stay in the top four with a victory. In fact, a win would put them back in first place overnight. This match will be preceded by a women's game between Rude Girls and PHC Teasers which has been moved forward from Sunday.

Either Southampton Rangers or North Village will miss out of a Dudley Eve spot as only one of them will be in the top four after tomorrow. If the top four teams all win then both will miss out, unless Rangers score a big enough win over Village to move ahead of PHC on goal difference.

If current form is anything to go by then Dandy Town should not have any problems with bottom team St. George's and thus easily qualify for the Christmas tournament.

St. George's captain Neil Paynter, a former Dandy Town player, will return from a one match suspension to boost their defence.

Second Division leaders Hotels are in a good position to open an eight point gap over second-placed Somerset Trojans who have a bye this weekend.

Hotels take on winless BAA at St. John's Field while Social Club and Wolves will be looking to move in on second place when they clash at Devonshire Rec.

Social Club are third, a point behind Somerset, while Wolves are a further two points back.

In the other matches, Paget host Hamilton Parish at Southampton Oval and Prospect, through to the semi-finals of the Shield but still winless in the league, take on Somerset Eagles at Police Field.
