Erving, Bird arrive

Bermuda as guests of sporting goods giant, Converse, which is holding a convention at the Marriott Hotel.

No longer active, the pair are involved with promotions at the company, but can be remembered by their appearances together in television commercials promoting the popular basketball shoe.

Erving spent over a decade competing in the American Basketball Association (ABA) -- now defunct -- and National Basketball Association (NBA), showcasing a wide variety of dunks and floating drives to the basket that seemed to defy gravity.

He was said to have elevated the dunk to an art form, one taken a notch higher by the latest "sky-walker'', Michael Jordan.

Erving retired in the late 1980's after spending several seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers and won one World Championship.

Bird, meanwhile, was a member of the vaunted Boston Celtics team that along with the Los Angeles Lakers dominated the '80s.

He retired prior to the 1992-93 season with a treasure-trove of four World Championships and an Olympic Gold medal from his being a part of the United States "Dream Team''.

The pair have been enjoying the Island with golfing and other activities planned.
